Chapter 6 - The Dinner Party Invitation

Two months after the wedding disaster, my phone buzzed with an unexpected notification.

It wasn't a text from Laya, and it wasn't a frantic voice note from Mom. It was a formal calendar invitation, designed in clean, elegant typography, sent from an executive email address associated with Wellington Industries.

You and Daniel are cordially invited to a private autumn dinner at the Newport Estate.

Marcus had planned a quiet, intimate evening to celebrate the official launch of our new community outreach initiative, inviting only the key individuals who had helped build the foundation from the ground up—including Julian, our lead tech architect, and several senior medical directors from the downtown clinic.

When we arrived at the sprawling coastal estate, the air was crisp with the scent of pine and saltwater. The grand dining room was illuminated by dozens of candles, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished mahogany table.

As I took my seat beside Marcus, looking out through the French doors toward the dark, crashing Atlantic waves, I realized how far I had traveled from that cold, snow-covered park bench on Christmas Eve.

"Penny for your thoughts, Dr. Wellington," Marcus murmured, sliding a crystal glass of sparkling cider toward me.

"I was just thinking about how strange life is," I smiled, tracing the rim of the glass. "If you hadn't been sitting in that park barefoot... if Laya hadn't sent me that single text message... I’d probably still be sitting in my kitchen folding laundry, wondering why I wasn't enough."

Marcus reached across the table, covering my hand with his warm, steady fingers.

"You were always enough, Claudia," he said softly. "The people around you were simply too blind to see it."
