Chapter 1 - The Touch of a Dead Woman’s Ghost

(Suggested Facebook Hook: She lost her own baby 22 days ago. Now, a ruthless Mafia kingpin is forced to hand over his dying heir to a stranger in the freezing rain...)

Liana didn't flinch as the guard’s hand moved toward his jacket, where the heavy outline of a pistol pressed against the fabric. Her eyes never left the baby.

"I said, let me hold him," Liana repeated, her voice remarkably steady despite the shivering of her limbs. "He isn't sick. He's starving, and he’s cold. If you keep holding him like he’s a fragile piece of glass, he’ll choke on his own breath."

Matteo Varric stared at her. In the criminal underworld, he was a ghost—a man who ordered executions with a flick of his wrist. But tonight, standing under the dim security lights with rain plastering his dark hair to his forehead, he looked like a man drowning.

"If you are a spy sent by the Rossi family," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper, "I will bury you in the woods behind this house. Do you understand me?"

"I don't care about your wars," Liana said, stepping past the guard's outstretched arm. The guard reached for her shoulder, but Matteo raised a single, commanding finger.

"Let her," the boss commanded.

Liana stepped onto the marble portico. The warmth of the mansion’s foyer spilled out, smelling of expensive mahogany, tobacco, and the sharp, clinical scent of baby formula. She reached out her arms.

The moment Matteo transferred the screaming bundle into her embrace, a profound silence seemed to fall over the courtyard.

Nico was tiny, far too small for his three months. His face was purple from crying, his little chest heaving. But as Liana pulled him against her chest, her body reacted instantly. The deep, aching pressure in her breasts—the milk she had been cursing for three weeks—surged with a fierce, painful warmth. She didn't have a bottle. She didn't have anything but herself.

She turned her back slightly to the men, shielding the child from the cold wind, and slipped her hand beneath her wet collar. She pressed the baby close, guiding him.

Within seconds, the frantic, jagged screams of Nico Varric stopped.

There was only the sound of the rain, and the rhythmic, desperate suckling of a hungry child.

Matteo stood frozen. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his cheek twitched. The guards looked away, suddenly uncomfortable, realizing they were witnessing something incredibly private, incredibly sacred.

"You're a wet nurse," Matteo whispered, stepping closer. His scent—expensive cologne mixed with rain and gun oil—wrapped around her.

"I am a mother," Liana corrected bitterly, a tear slipping down her cheek, blending with the rain. "Or... I was. Until twenty-two days ago."

Matteo looked from her tear-stained face to his son, who was now drifting into a peaceful sleep, his tiny hand curled against Liana’s wet coat.

"Who sent you?" Matteo demanded, the paranoia of a mafia don returning. "Nobody knew my wife died in childbirth. Nobody knew I brought the boy here."

Liana looked up, her eyes empty of fear. "No one sent me. God just got tired of hearing us both cry."

Matteo stared at her for a long, silent moment. "Inside. Now."

As the massive iron doors shut behind them, locking out the storm, Liana had no idea she had just walked into a golden cage. And outside, hidden in the shadows of the tree line, a pair of headlights flashed once before disappearing into the dark.
