Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"Why do you have my sister's son, Matteo?"
The voice was cold, cutting through the silence of the study like a knife.
Matteo turned around from his desk. He saw Liana standing there, holding the black-market birth certificate, tears of rage and betrayal streaming down her face.
Matteo sighed, closing his eyes. "Liana... I wanted to protect you from this."
"Protect me?!" Liana shrieked, her voice echoing off the walls. "My sister is missing! My baby died in a hospital three weeks ago, and now I find out you have her child? Did you kill my sister? Did you steal this baby? Did you kill my son to make sure I would have milk to feed yours?!"
"No!" Matteo roared, slamming his hands on the desk. He walked over to her, his eyes desperate. "I didn't kill anyone, Liana! Listen to me!"
He grabbed her shoulders, forcing her to look at him.
"Your sister, Elena, was working for the Rossi family. She was a honeytrap. She was sent to seduce me, to get pregnant, so the Rossis would have an heir to claim my empire. But she fell in love with one of my captains. When she got pregnant, she realized the Rossis would kill her and the baby once he was born. So she fled."
Matteo’s grip softened. "She came to Clara. My wife was dying, Liana. Clara knew I needed an heir to keep the syndicate from tearing itself apart when I die. Clara took the baby to protect him. Your sister Elena... she died in childbirth. We buried her with honor."
Liana shook her head, sobbing. "And my baby? Why did my baby die?"
"The Rossis," Matteo whispered, his voice cracking with genuine sorrow. "They found out about the baby swap. They poisoned your baby in the clinic, thinking he was my heir. They wanted to kill my bloodline. You were a casualty of our war, Liana. I didn't know... I swear to God, I didn't know who you were until you showed up at my gate. But when I saw you... when I saw how Nico took to you... I realized God was giving us both a second chance."
Before Liana could process the devastating truth—that her baby had been murdered because of a mafia war—the doors to the study burst open.
But it wasn't Matteo's guards.
Standing in the doorway, holding a gold-plated revolver, was Matteo’s trusted second-in-command, Marco.
And behind him stood a woman Liana thought she would never see again.
