Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Crib

(Suggested Facebook Hook: She found a hidden compartment in the nursery. Inside was a birth certificate that changed everything. The baby she was nursing wasn't the Mafia boss's son—he was her own dead sister’s child!)

Two weeks passed. The attack had been cleaned up, the dead buried, and security tripled.

Liana had become the heart of the Varric estate. She nursed Nico, bathed him, and watched as his pale cheeks turned a healthy, rosy pink. Under her care, the boy flourished. And slowly, the ice around Matteo’s heart began to melt.

He no longer looked at her with suspicion. He watched her from doorways, a soft, longing look in his dark eyes. For the first time in years, the fearsome mafia boss was smiling.

"You look beautiful tonight, Liana," Matteo said softly one evening as they sat in the nursery.

Liana blushed, looking down. "I’m just a maid, Mr. Varric."

"You are much more than that," he said, stepping closer. He reached out, his rough, scarred hand gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The tension between them was electric, born of shared trauma and the quiet nights they spent watching over the child. "You brought this house back to life. You brought me back to life."

But Liana couldn't shake the dead assassin's words. He isn't Clara’s.

Late that night, while Matteo was away at a "business meeting" to deal with the rival Rossi family, Liana decided to look for answers.

She searched the nursery. It was a beautiful room, filled with expensive toys Nico was too young to use. But behind a heavy oak wardrobe, she noticed a loose floorboard.

Her heart racing, she used a butter knife from her dinner tray to pry it open.

Inside was a leather-bound folder.

Liana opened it, expecting to find mafia documents or hit lists. Instead, she found medical records.

Clara Varric’s autopsy report.

Liana’s eyes scanned the medical jargon. Hysterectomy... age 18. Clara Varric was entirely barren. She could never have conceived a child.

Liana’s breath hitched. If Clara couldn't have children, then who was Nico’s mother?

She flipped to the next document. It was a birth certificate from a black-market clinic on the edge of town. The mother’s name was listed.

Elena Graves.

Liana dropped the folder, her hands shaking violently, her mind spinning into absolute chaos.

Elena. Her younger sister, who had run away two years ago and vanished without a trace.

Nico wasn't just any baby. He was Liana’s nephew.

And then, a horrible, chilling realization washed over her.

If Elena was his mother... why had Liana’s own baby died in the hospital twenty-two days ago, right after a doctor told her there were "complications"?

Did they swap the babies?
