Chapter 4 - The Predator’s RingThe morning sun cast long, golden shadows across the private courtyard of the Rusk estate, a sprawling limestone fortress nestled deep within the secure perimeter of Lincoln Park. High stone walls, iron gates laced with intricate security sensors, and towering oak trees shielded the property from the prying eyes of the Chicago press.

Mara stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the master suite, clutching a porcelain cup of black coffee. Her fingers trembled slightly, not from fear, but from the surreal reality of her new life.
Less than twenty-four hours ago, she had been a cornered rabbit fighting for a decaying community center. Now, she was standing in the inner sanctum of the most feared man in Illinois, wearing a silk robe that cost more than her first car.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Damian walked in. He had already showered; his dark hair was damp, clinging slightly to his forehead, and he wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing strong, corded forearms etched with old scars.
He set a small velvet box on the mahogany table between them.
“What is this?” Mara asked, her voice cautious.
“Open it,” Damian said, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
Mara stepped closer, her heart performing a nervous flutter. She lifted the lid. Inside, resting against a bed of black satin, was a ring. It wasn’t a delicate, traditional diamond meant to symbolize polite suburban romance. It was an antique emerald-cut canary diamond, flanked by two deep black onyx stones, set in heavy platinum. It looked like a royal signet ring meant to seal execution orders.
“It belonged to my grandmother,” Damian said quietly, watching her face. “She ran this family’s shipping empire through the Depression and two gang wars. She never took off that ring, and she never lost a single battle.”
Mara looked up at him. “Damian, this is… it’s too much. We made a tactical agreement last night. We don’t need to play house for an audience anymore.”
“Who said we were playing?” Damian stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat of his chest. He reached into the box, lifted the heavy ring, and took her left hand.
His fingers were warm and firm as he slid the platinum band onto her ring finger. It fit with terrifying perfection.
“The board meeting was just the beginning, Mara,” Damian said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. “Gideon Pratt isn’t going to accept defeat quietly. His father has lost millions in city contracts because of our alliance, and they are already planning their retaliation. If you want to keep your community center—if you want to keep breathing free air in this city—you need to wear that ring and wear it proudly.”
Before Mara could process the warning, a sharp knock echoed at the master suite door.
Damian’s personal head of security, a towering ex-marine named Vance, pushed the door open without waiting for an invitation, his face grim.
“Boss,” Vance said, glancing briefly at Mara before looking back at Damian. “We have a problem. The Pratt family just filed an emergency injunction with the city zoning board, claiming the foundation’s historic charter was fraudulently altered. And… they’ve released a dossier to the press.”
Mara’s blood ran cold. “A dossier? What kind of dossier?”
Vance hesitated, his eyes shifting to the floor. “They’re trying to destroy your reputation, Mrs. Rusk. They’ve dug up old medical records from your mother’s final months, claiming you were legally incompetent when you inherited the trust.”
For a second, the room seemed to tilt. The old terror—the suffocating, helpless panic that Gideon had spent years embedding in her mind—threatened to pull her under.
Then she felt a heavy, calloused hand settle firmly on the back of her neck.
Damian’s touch grounded her instantly. He didn’t look panicked; he looked like a god of war whose temple had just been desecrated.
“Vance,” Damian said, his voice cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen. “Get the legal team on line one. Then pull the surveillance footage from the Halcyon Grand Hotel ballroom last night.”
“What are you going to do?” Mara asked, her voice trembling slightly.
May you like
Damian turned her around to face him, his dark eyes burning with absolute fury.
“They want to play dirty in public?” Damian’s lips curved into a cruel, beautiful smile. “Let’s show them what happens when you wake a sleeping dragon.”
