Chapter 5 - Blood on the LedgerThe sleek, tinted windows of Damian’s armored Maybach hummed as it sliced through the midday Chicago traffic, heading straight for the headquarters of Pratt Urban Development downtown.

Inside the back seat, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Mara sat beside Damian, staring at her tablet screen as headlines from local tabloids scrolled past.
“HEIRESS OR FRAUD? New Doubts Cast Over Meridian Ward Foundation Takeover.” “RUSHING TO THE ALTAR: Is Mara Ellison’s Marriage to Crime Boss Damian Rusk a Desperate Cover-Up?”
She felt sick to her stomach. All the progress of the previous night—the victory in the boardroom, the overwhelming support—was being systematically poisoned by Gideon’s PR machine.
“They’re trying to force the city to freeze the trust before the weekend,” Mara murmured, her fingers gripping the edges of the tablet until her knuckles turned white. “If the zoning board grants the injunction, the community center goes into receivership. Pratt gets it for pennies.”
A large, warm hand covered hers, prying her fingers loose from the tablet. Damian pulled her hand into his lap, his thumb gently stroking her palm.
“They won’t get a hearing,” Damian said flatly.
“How can you be so sure? Gideon’s father has judges in his pocket.”
“Judges retire, Mara. Or they step down when their offshore accounts are suddenly audited by federal investigators,” Damian replied without a trace of emotion. “By the time we walk into that building, the Pratt family won’t be worried about zoning laws. They’ll be worried about staying out of federal prison.”
Mara stared at him, realizing just how vast and terrifying Damian’s reach truly was. He wasn’t just a businessman; he was an apex predator who controlled the invisible levers of the city.
The Maybach glided to a smooth stop outside the soaring glass-and-steel monolith of Pratt Urban Development. Dozens of reporters and camera crews swarmed the entrance, tipped off by an anonymous press release about a “contentious legal showdown.”
Flashbulbs popped like lightning storms as the car door opened.
Damian stepped out first, his tall, imposing frame instantly commanding the space. He didn’t rush. He turned back, extending his hand to Mara.
She took a deep breath, lifted her chin, and placed her hand in his. As she stepped out into the blinding glare of the cameras, the heavy canary diamond and black onyx ring flashed brilliantly in the sunlight.
“Mr. Rusk! Mr. Rusk! Is the marriage legitimate or a tax maneuver?” shouted a reporter from the Chicago Tribune, shoving a microphone toward them.
Damian didn’t break stride. He wrapped his free arm securely around Mara’s waist, pulling her flush against his side in a gesture that was fiercely protective and undeniably possessive.

“Ask my wife,” Damian said coldly, his deep voice carrying over the crowd. “She’s the one holding the keys to the city.”
They swept past the security guards—who wisely stepped aside without a word—and marched directly into the private elevators reserved for executive leadership.
