Chapter 6 - The Confession in the VaultThe top-floor executive suite of Pratt Urban Development was a shrine to corporate excess. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves, modern art that cost millions, and a panoramic view of the Chicago River set the stage for power.

Senior Pratt—Arthur Pratt Sr., a silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes—sat behind a massive glass desk. Beside him stood Gideon, looking nervous despite his expensive suit.

When the heavy double doors crashed open, Arthur didn’t even stand up.

“Mr. Rusk,” Arthur said smoothly, though a flicker of genuine apprehension crossed his eyes. “You’re trespassing. And as for your sudden… bride, she has no legal standing here.”

Damian didn’t answer immediately. He walked into the center of the room, letting go of Mara’s waist only to slide his hands casually into his pockets. He looked around the office as if inspecting a slaughterhouse before choosing his hooks.

“Trespassing?” Damian chuckled, a dark, humorless sound. “Arthur, you’re sitting in a building financed by shell companies that haven’t paid municipal taxes since 2018. Shall we talk about the zoning bribes you funneled through the South Side dock terminals?”

Arthur’s face drained of color. “You’re bluffing.”

Damian flicked a glance toward Vance, who stood by the door. Vance stepped forward and tossed a thick manila folder directly onto Arthur’s pristine glass desk. The impact echoed like a gunshot.

Gideon lunged forward, grabbing the folder and flipping it open. Inside were bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and signed affidavits from former Pratt employees detailing years of extortion and fraud.

“Where… where did you get this?” Gideon stammered, looking up in sheer horror.

“Your father’s chief accountant has very expensive tastes in gambling, Gideon,” Damian said smoothly, stepping closer until he towered over the desk. “And Northstar Harbor Holdings always pays cash for good information.”

Arthur slammed the folder shut, his hands shaking violently. “What do you want? Name your price. You want the community center? Take it! Drop the investigation.”

Mara stepped forward from behind Damian, her eyes blazing with a fierce, righteous fire that left both Pratts speechless.

“You don’t get to bargain,” Mara said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the expansive office. “You tried to destroy my mother’s legacy. You tried to humiliate me, break me, and steal what generations built.”

She stepped right up to the edge of the desk, looking down at Gideon—the man who had once made her feel small, weak, and worthless.

“The foundation isn't for sale, Gideon,” Mara continued, her voice dripping with absolute coldness. “And neither am I.”

Damian smiled, a look of profound, terrifying pride washing over his features. He reached out, wrapping his arm around Mara’s shoulders, pulling her close against his chest.

“You have twenty-four hours to vacate this building, liquidate your holdings in the Meridian Ward district, and leave Chicago permanently,” Damian told the Pratts, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “If you aren’t gone by tomorrow morning, I won’t just ruin your company. I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your lives sharing a cell.”
