Chapter 9 - Shadows and SunlightThat evening, the Rusk estate was quiet.

The celebration in the city had ended, and the sprawling limestone mansion was bathed in the soft, golden glow of twilight.
Mara sat at the grand mahogany desk in Damian’s private study, reviewing the final architectural blueprints for the second phase of the community center expansion. Her signature, bold and unhesitating, sat at the bottom of the financial approval documents.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Damian walked in. He carried two crystal glasses of amber whiskey, setting one down on the desk beside her before leaning against the edge, watching her with that intense, hungry gaze that never quite faded.
“You handled him today,” Damian said, a note of quiet pride in his voice. “You didn't even need me to step in.”
Mara looked up, swirling the whiskey in her glass. “I learned from the best teacher in Chicago.”
Damian chuckled, reaching out to trace his thumb along her jawline, tilting her face up toward his. “You didn't need a teacher, Mara. You were always a queen. You just forgot to wear your crown.”
He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that tasted of victory, smoke, and eternity.
When he pulled back, his dark eyes searched hers with an unspoken question that had lingered since the night they first met at the Halcyon Grand Hotel ballroom.
“It wasn't supposed to be real, you know,” Mara whispered, a faint, teasing smile touching her lips. “The marriage. The ring. The pact.”
Damian’s eyes darkened, a dangerous, possessive heat flaring in their depths.
“I don’t do temporary, Mara,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising growl. “The moment you asked Chicago’s most feared crime boss to pretend to be your husband… I chose forever.”
May you like
Mara smiled, setting her glass aside, and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him down to her.
She had asked for a shield to save her mother’s legacy, and instead, she had found an empire. And she had no intention of ever letting go.
