Chapter 16 - The ArraignmentThe federal courtroom on the fifth floor of the Moakley Federal Courthouse was dim and austere, smelling of floor wax and old legal briefs.

Friday morning brought Ethan Caldwell face-to-face with a federal magistrate.

Gone was the tailored Italian wool suit, the designer silver-rimmed glasses, and the confident, charismatic smirk that had charmed boardrooms for a decade. He wore an orange detention jumpsuit, his wrists bound in heavy steel chains, his hair unwashed and disheveled.

He sat at the defense table next to a public defender who looked like he had barely slept all week.

In the back row of the public gallery, sitting quietly in a navy wool coat with her hands folded neatly in her lap, sat Evelyn.

She hadn't come to gloat. Gloating was noisy, and noise was a waste of energy. She had simply come to observe the final entry in a ledger she had balanced herself.

As the judge read through the twelve counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and corporate embezzlement, Ethan shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He turned his head toward the gallery, his eyes scanning the rows of spectators.

And then he saw her.

For a single, suspended second, Ethan’s eyes locked onto Evelyn’s calm, unblinking gaze. There was no hatred in her expression, no triumph, no anger. Just the quiet, absolute indifference of a woman looking at a stranger who no longer mattered.

Ethan’s head dropped slowly toward the defense table.

“How does the defendant plead?” the judge asked formally.

“Not... not guilty, Your Honor,” Ethan mumbled, his voice cracking against the microphone.

The judge set the trial date for late autumn, denying bail due to the severe flight risk and offshore asset concealment. The marshals escorted him back through the side door, the heavy iron latch clanging shut behind him.
