Chapter 25 - A New Dawn

By sunrise, the smoke had cleared, and federal backup—summoned by an encrypted emergency ping Massimo had sent to allied local authorities—secured the estate. Don Valerio’s men were either handcuffed in the courtyard or retreating back into the Atlantic mist.

The mansion was scarred with bullet holes and shattered glass, but it was still standing.

I sat on the edge of the master suite bed, cleaning a minor powder burn on Massimo’s forearm with an antiseptic wipe. He winced slightly, his dark eyes locked onto my face the entire time.

“You’re out of your mind, Tessa Fitzgerald,” Massimo murmured softly, his hand coming up to gently cup my cheek, wiping away a smear of soot. “You could have been killed.”

“And you could have bled out in the hallway if I hadn't brought the lamp,” I countered, a faint, exhausted smile touching my lips. I looked around the bullet-scarred room, then back into his intense, unyielding gaze. “We can't keep living like this, Massimo. Every time we build something, someone tries to tear it down.”

Massimo’s expression darkened, but a profound, absolute resolve settled into his features. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy gold-banded key, dropping it into my open palm.

“Then we stop defending the house,” Massimo said, his voice deep and steady. “We burn the old world to the ground and build a new empire where no one can ever touch us again.”

I closed my fingers around the key, feeling the weight of our shared future. The mafia lord had found his salvation not in running away from his demons, but in the fierce, unbreakable loyalty of a doctor who refused to let him fall.
