Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of Betrayal

The silence that stretched between us was absolute. Massimo didn’t blink. For a terrifying second, I thought I had pushed too far, that his loyalty to his inner circle would override his suspicion and he would hand me over to Viktor on a silver platter.

Instead, a low, dangerous growl ripped from his chest.

“Repeat that,” he ordered, his voice dropping an octave, vibrating with suppressed fury.

“I checked your medication logs this morning, and the dosage of your neuro-inhibitors was doubled yesterday without my authorization,” I lied smoothly, covering the eavesdropping incident with a clinical excuse. “Someone in this house is tampering with your recovery, Massimo. And if I had to guess... it’s coming from the top of your chain of command.”

Massimo’s jaw clenched so hard I thought I heard the enamel crack. He grabbed the armrests of his custom chair with such force that his knuckles turned ghostly white.

“My inner circle has been with me for ten years,” he ground out, though a flicker of doubt crossed his shadowed eyes. “Nobody makes a move in this house without my approval.”

“Then someone is bypassing you,” I countered, stepping around to face him directly, crossing my arms. “Think about it. You’re incapacitated. Who’s running the day-to-day operations while you’re stuck in this chair? Who stands right outside those double doors every time you hold a meeting?”

The name hung unspoken in the air between us like a guillotine blade: Viktor.

Massimo’s gaze darkened into an abyss. He had built his entire empire on absolute loyalty, surviving assassination attempts, federal indictments, and rival syndicates through sheer tactical brilliance. The idea that the rot had infested his own household—that his most trusted shadow was sharpening a knife for his back—hit him harder than the spinal trauma that put him in the chair.

“Prove it,” Massimo whispered, the command sharp enough to cut glass.

“I can’t prove it with words,” I replied, leaning down so our eyes were level. “I need data. I need access to the secure server in the east wing office. And to get that, you need to distract your guards long enough for me to slip in tonight.”

Massimo let out a harsh, bark-like laugh, his dark eyes gleaming with a mixture of disbelief and fierce, predatory respect.

“You really have a death wish, don't you, Tessa?”

“I have fourteen days to pay my tuition, Mr. Pascale. Compared to student loan debt, your mafia assassins are practically a mild inconvenience.”

He stared at me for a long, heavy moment. Then, slowly, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile spread across his face—the smile of a mob boss who had just found a weapon far more lethal than a gun.
