Chapter 1 - The Weight of SilenceMr. Charles Whitmore did not look down at the plate. His pale, piercing eyes were fixed entirely on Grace.

The silence in the grand kitchen stretched tight like a piano wire. Outside, the afternoon sunlight still warmed the polished floor, but inside, the air suddenly felt glacial. Grace’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She braced herself for the inevitable reprimand—to be thrown out onto the street, disgraced, with her last shred of dignity stripped away.

Instead, Charles stepped into the room. His Italian leather shoes made a soft, measured click against the hardwood.

“You have been working since five this morning, Miss Miller,” Charles said, his voice deep, smooth, and devoid of the anger she expected. It carried a strange, unnerving weight.

Grace swallowed hard, her throat painfully dry. “Yes, sir. I’m—I’m finished with the guest rooms, and I was just cleaning up the—the counter before—”

“Before eating scraps off a plate on the floor,” he finished for her, his gaze finally dropping to the white plate in her hands.

A hot flush crept up Grace’s neck. She wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole. “I didn’t mean to break any rules. I was hungry, and the kitchen staff had already left—”

“Rules in this house dictate that staff are provided proper meals, Grace,” Charles interrupted, stepping closer. So close she could catch the faint scent of sandalwood and expensive cedar. “It appears my household manager has been neglecting her duties. Or perhaps my kitchen staff are incompetent.”

“No, sir! It was my fault. I didn’t ask—”

“Silence,” Charles commanded quietly.

It wasn't a shout. It didn’t need to be. Grace instantly clamped her mouth shut, her breath hitching.

Charles reached out, his long, manicured fingers closing gently around the rim of the small white plate. For a terrifying second, Grace thought he was going to snatch it away and throw it in the trash to punish her. Instead, with surprising strength and deliberate control, he took the plate entirely out of her trembling hands and set it down on the pristine marble counter.

“Sit at the table, Grace,” he ordered, gesturing toward the heavy mahogany dining table in the adjacent breakfast nook.

“Sir?”

“That is not a request. Sit.”

Trembling, her legs feeling like water, Grace walked over and pulled out a high-backed velvet chair. She sat down, her posture rigid, her maid’s uniform feeling heavier and more suffocating than ever.

Charles turned to the massive stainless-steel refrigerator. To Grace’s utter shock, the terrifying billionaire of Whitmore Manor pulled out a covered porcelain tray left behind by the private chef—a tray containing a warm, untouched filet mignon, roasted asparagus, and duchess potatoes.

He brought it over, setting it directly in front of her.

“Eat this,” Charles said, pulling out the chair opposite her and sitting down, resting his elbows on the table, locking his intense gaze onto her face. “Properly. Without shame, and without hiding on the floor like a thief in your own workplace.”

Grace stared at the steaming food, tears finally spilling over her damp cheeks. She didn't know whether to cry from relief or terror. What did Charles Whitmore want from her?
