Chapter 8 - A New EmpireThree years later.

The morning sunlight poured through the towering glass windows of Whitmore Manor, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished wooden floors. The white marble counters in the grand kitchen shone like polished ice, exactly as they had the day Grace first knelt on the floor in defeat.
Only now, she wasn't kneeling.
Grace Miller stood at the center of the massive kitchen, wearing an exquisite, tailored silk designer dress instead of a maid's uniform. Her dark brown hair was styled in soft, elegant waves falling gracefully over her shoulders.
At twenty-four, she wasn't the invisible, terrified orphan scrubbing floors anymore. She was the Chief Operating Officer of Whitmore Global, the youngest and most formidable executive in the city’s corporate history.
Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor. Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, resting comfortably against her stomach, and a familiar, warm chin settled gently onto her shoulder.
“You’re thinking about the past again,” Charles murmured, his voice rich and steady as he kissed the side of her neck.
Grace smiled, leaning back against his chest, her hands resting over his. “I was just thinking about the cold chicken and the white plate on the floor.”
Charles chuckled softly, turning her around in his arms so she was facing him. At sixty-five, he looked more distinguished and powerful than ever, but the cold, untouchable wall he once wore around his heart had completely melted away for her.
“That plate is long gone, Mrs. Whitmore,” Charles whispered, a loving twinkle in his pale eyes as he used her new, legally official surname. “Along with everyone who ever made you feel small.”
Grace wrapped her arms around his neck, looking up into the eyes of the man who had turned her darkest nightmare into her greatest triumph.
“I know,” she whispered, smiling against his lips. “Because in a house full of food, and a world full of sharks... I finally found the only thing that truly mattered.”

“And what is that?” Charles asked softly, raising an eyebrow.
“Dignity,” Grace whispered, kissing him gently. “And you.”
