Chapter 3 - The Secret in the StudyAt precisely 8:00 PM, Grace stood outside the heavy oak doors of Mr. Whitmore’s private study. Her palms were slick with sweat. She raised a hand and knocked twice.

“Enter.”

She pushed the door open. The study was a fortress of dark mahogany bookshelves, leather-bound volumes, and a roaring fireplace that cast long, dancing shadows across the room. Charles sat behind a massive oak desk, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand.

“Shut the door, Grace, and sit.”

She obeyed, stepping inside and closing the door softly. She took a seat in the leather armchair across from him.

“You’re wondering why you’re here,” Charles stated, taking a slow sip of his drink.

“Yes, sir. Am I... am I being fired?”

A faint, humorless smirk touched the corner of Charles’s lips. “Fired? No. In fact, quite the opposite. I’ve reviewed your personnel file, Grace Miller. Twenty-one years old. Top of your class at St. Jude’s Academy before your family lost everything due to fraudulent debts racked up by your late father.”

Grace flinched as if struck. “How do you... why do you know that?”

“I make it a habit to know everything about everyone who steps foot inside my home,” Charles said smoothly, setting his glass down. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. “Which brings me to why you’re really here. I don’t need another maid, Grace. I have a dozen women downstairs who can dust furniture and polish silverware.”

Confusion warred with panic inside Grace. “Then why did you hire me? Why keep me here?”

“Because,” Charles said, his eyes locking onto hers with intense, burning focus, “I need someone I can trust. And more importantly... someone who knows what it’s like to have everything stolen from them.”

Grace stared at him, her breath hitching. “I don’t understand.”

“My business empire—Whitmore Global—is currently facing an internal corporate threat,” Charles explained, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. “Someone within my executive board is leaking sensitive financial documents to our biggest rival, Richard Sterling. I need an undercover operative inside my own house. Someone no one looks twice at. Someone everyone assumes is invisible.”

Grace’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You want me to spy? Mr. Whitmore, I’m a maid! I clean floors! I don’t know anything about corporate espionage!”

“You are observant,” Charles countered sharply. “You notice details others miss. And you need money. Your father’s creditors are still hunting your family down, aren’t they? They’re threatening to take your mother’s final resting place, and your own safety.”

Grace felt the blood drain entirely from her face. He knew about the debts. He knew about the threats. He had completely cornered her.

“If you help me uncover the rat within my estate and my company,” Charles continued, his voice lowering to a smooth, persuasive purr, “I will wipe out every single cent of your family’s debt. You will be completely free. But if you refuse... well, you can go back to eating cold chicken scraps off the kitchen floor tomorrow morning.”
