Chapter 4 - The Game BeginsThe proposal hung in the heavy air of the study like a ticking time bomb. Grace looked at Charles Whitmore—a man who held both her destruction and her salvation in the palm of his hand.

“What do I have to do?” she asked quietly, her voice trembling slightly with resolve.

A dark, approving glint flashed in Charles’s eyes. He stood up, walked around the desk, and handed her a sleek, encrypted burner phone.

“Starting tomorrow, you will continue your normal duties as a maid,” Charles instructed, standing dangerously close to her. “However, Mrs. Higgins will assign you to clean the executive wing on the third floor—an area normally off-limits to lower staff. Specifically, my private office safe and the guest suite currently occupied by my chief financial officer, Arthur Vance.”

Grace took the phone, her fingers brushing against his warm palm. She shivered, though not entirely from fear. “Arthur Vance? But he’s your most trusted advisor.”

“Which is precisely why he is the primary suspect,” Charles replied coldly. “He has been staying at the manor this week. While he is downstairs at dinner tomorrow night, you will slip into his suite. Look for a flash drive, a hidden ledger, or anything bearing the logo of Sterling Enterprises.”

“And if I get caught?” Grace whispered.

“You won't get caught,” Charles said, his voice dropping to a low, reassuring murmur right beside her ear. “Because I will make sure everyone is occupied downstairs. And because you are smarter than they give you credit for, Grace.”

The next twenty-four hours dragged by like an eternity. Grace moved through the mansion like a ghost, her every action monitored by the sharp, suspicious eyes of Mrs. Higgins. But now, her fear had transformed into a dangerous, electric adrenaline.

The following evening, at precisely 7:30 PM, the grand dining room was filled with the clinking of crystal and silver. Through the open pocket doors, Grace saw Arthur Vance laughing heartily at one of Charles’s dry jokes, completely unaware of the trap closing around him.

Heart pounding against her ribs, Grace slipped away from the scullery, darted up the winding staircase, and made her way to the third-floor executive wing.

The heavy mahogany door to Arthur Vance’s suite was unlocked.

She pushed it open, stepping into the dark, lavishly decorated room. The moonlight streamed through the tall windows, casting long, eerie shadows. She flicked on a small penlight and headed straight for the mahogany desk in the corner.

Her hands shook as she pulled open the top drawer. Files, expense reports, high-end pens—nothing unusual. She checked the second drawer. Still nothing.

Frustration bubbled in her chest. Was Charles wrong? Was Vance innocent?

Just as she was about to give up, her fingers brushed against a loose wooden panel at the very back of the bottom drawer. She pressed it. With a soft click, a secret compartment sprang open.

Inside lay a single black flash drive and a stack of printed documents bearing the official letterhead of Sterling Enterprises.

Grace gasped, quickly reaching down to grab the flash drive.

Suddenly, the overhead lights in the room snapped on, flooding the suite with brilliant, blinding illumination.

“Well, well, well,” a sharp, venomous voice drawled from the doorway.

Grace spun around, dropping the documents in sheer panic. Standing in the doorway, blocking her only exit, was Mrs. Higgins—a malicious, triumphant smile spread across her wrinkled face.
