Chapter 1 - THE PUBLIC HUMILIATIONMrs. Thompson’s lips tightened into a hard, bloodless line as her gaze locked onto the twins' bare feet. The classroom went dead silent, save for the hum of the overhead fluorescent light.

"Step forward," Mrs. Thompson commanded, her voice cutting through the quiet like a piece of broken glass.

Emma and Lily exchanged a terrified glance. Slowly, hand in hand, they walked down the center aisle. The other children watched with wide, unblinking eyes. Some giggled nervously, whispering behind cupped hands.

"Up on the platform. Next to the easel," Mrs. Thompson ordered, pointing a rigid finger.

The twins climbed the wooden step.

"Turn around," the substitute instructed harshly. "Face the class."

Emma tried to shrink behind her sister, a tear finally spilling over her lashes. Lily stood straight, her small chin trembling, keeping her promise to be brave.

"Look at them," Mrs. Thompson announced to the entire room, gesturing to the girls' bare, dusty feet. "This is Pine Hill Academy. We have standards here. We have rules about uniforms. Shoes are not optional accessories; they are part of the uniform code. When children come to school looking like street urchins, it drags down the dignity of every single student in this room."

A few kids pointed. A boy in the front row laughed out loud.

"Pine Hill Academy is not a charity ward," Mrs. Thompson continued, her voice dripping with disdain. "If your parents cannot afford proper footwear, perhaps you belong in a different kind of school. A public one. Now, go to the principal’s office. Tell Dr. Sterling you are suspended until your mother learns how to dress you properly."

Lily gripped her sister’s hand tighter. "Our mom worked all night," Lily whispered defiantly, though her voice shook. "She bought us notebooks. She said education is the key."

"Silence!" Mrs. Thompson snapped. "Out. Now."
