Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Heritage

Before I could process Adrian’s words, a heavy thud echoed through the foyer.

Grandfather’s silver-headed cane clattered against the marble. His grip on my shoulder loosened, and he stumbled forward, his hand clutching his chest. His face turned a dangerous shade of ash gray.

"Grandfather!" I screamed, catching him before he hit the ground. The security guards immediately swarmed, drawing their weapons on the Harlans, but Victor and Marissa were already backing away, laughing.

"You think we didn't prepare for the day the old man found out?" Marissa mocked, her silk pajamas shimmering under the chandelier light. "Adrian might be an idiot in business, Elena, but he knows chemistry."

Adrian stepped forward, looking down at us like a king looking at peasants. "Your grandfather has been taking his heart medication faithfully every morning, Elena. The medication shipped directly from the Vale Group's private pharmacy. Did you really think your family empire was airtight? We didn't need to break into your fortress. We just bought the gatekeeper."

My mind raced. The forensic accountant inside me began firing at a thousand miles an hour. The pharmacy. The Vale Group's medical division. The CFO of that division was Adrian’s uncle.

They hadn't just targeted me in the attic; they had been poisoning my grandfather for months, waiting for the stress of my 'disappearance' to trigger a fatal stroke. The foreclosure notice was the trigger. They knew he would come furious, accelerating his heart rate while the slow-acting digitalis analog in his system reached toxic levels.

"Call an ambulance!" I roared at the security guards.

"No time," the lead guard said, lifting Grandfather onto his shoulders. "The traffic in the downtown district is gridlocked. We have to use the private chopper at the pad three blocks away."

As they rushed Grandfather out the door, Adrian shouted after us, "Go ahead, run! The moment Malcolm Vale dies, the Vale Group’s shares automatically freeze pending probate. And guess who holds the proxy voting rights signed by Elena Vale-Harlan? Me!"

Inside the speeding SUV, holding my grandfather's freezing hand, I felt the old weakness fade completely. Replacing it was a cold, calculated rage. I pulled out the burner phone the security guard handed me. My fingers flew across the screen, accessing the secure server from the chandelier camera.

I didn't call the police. I didn't call the hospital.

I called the one person the Harlans feared more than my grandfather: Marcus Vance, the ruthless federal prosecutor who had spent the last five years trying to take down corporate sharks.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "It’s Elena Vale. I have the ledger, I have the video, and I have the biometric evidence of an attempted assassination. Are you ready to become the most famous prosecutor in the country?"

Chapter Hook: On the other end of the line, Marcus didn't answer with words. Instead, I heard the sound of sirens blaring in the background. "I’m already outside the Harlan mansion, Elena. But you need to check your own bank account right now. Someone just emptied it."
