Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Bite

With their empire crumbled and federal agents closing in, Victor Harlan snapped. He reached into his jacket, pulling out a compact ceramic pistol he had smuggled past the hotel security.

"If I lose everything, you die with me!" he roared, pointing the barrel straight at my forehead.

The crowd screamed, scattering in all directions. The federal agents drew their weapons, but Victor was too close to me. If they fired, the crossfire could hit the innocent bystanders or my grandfather.

Adrian didn't try to stop his father. Instead, he lunged at me from the side, trying to grab me as a human shield.

In that split second, all the months of isolation, the hunger, the pain of the IV needle being ripped from my skin, transformed into pure adrenaline. I didn't step back. I stepped forward.

I grabbed Adrian's outstretched arm, using his own momentum to twist his wrist behind his back. The bone popped with a satisfying CRACK. He screamed, dropping to his knees. I grabbed his collar and threw him directly into his father’s path just as Victor pulled the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet tore through Adrian’s shoulder. He collapsed, groaning in agony, bleeding onto the same expensive carpet his family had rented for their victory party.

Victor stared in horror at his own son, his hand trembling. Before he could aim at me again, the lead federal agent tackled him to the ground, pinning him beneath a heavy boot.

I walked over to where Victor lay, his face pressed against the floor, mirroring the exact position he had put me in just twenty-four hours ago.

I knelt down, my face inches from his. "Stop wasting my family’s air, you dying leech," I whispered, throwing his own words back into his face.

Marissa was already on her knees, weeping as handcuffs were slapped onto her manicured wrists. The entire Harlan family was dragged out of the ballroom in front of every major media outlet in the country. Their downfall was broadcast live to millions.

Grandfather rolled his chair up beside me, taking my hand. "You did well, Elena. The Vale Group is safe. You are the rightful CEO now."

I looked at the cameras, knowing this story would dominate the internet for months. But as I watched the paramedics wheel Adrian away on a gurney, a chill ran down my spine. He was smiling through the pain.

Chapter Hook: As he passed me, Adrian leaned up from the gurney and whispered, "You think my dad was the mastermind? Look at your parents' car accident report again, Elena. Who do you think paid the truck driver?"
