Chapter 3 - The Ghost Accounts

The digital screen of my phone reflected the horrific reality: $0.00.
My personal trust, a staggering $450 million legacy left by my late parents, had been completely wiped out in less than three minutes. The transaction logs showed a complex routing system through shell companies in Cyprus, the Cayman Islands, and finally, a ghost bank in Zurich.
"How?" I whispered, my voice shaking as the helicopter blades began to roar above us on the helipad. "The multi-signature authentication required my thumbprint!"
Then, I looked down at my trembling right hand. The wrist was bruised, the skin punctured by the raw tearing of the IV needle. During my final days in the attic, when I was half-conscious, Marissa hadn't just been checking my pulse. She had been using my thumb to unlock the biometric scanner on a portable banking terminal.
Grandfather was rushed into the helicopter, an oxygen mask strapped to his face. The paramedic looked at me grimly. "His vitals are dropping. We need to get him to the Vale Medical Center immediately, but his heart is failing."
"Hold on, Grandfather," I begged, pressing my forehead against his cold hand. "Please. Don't leave me alone with these monsters."
His eyes fluttered open for a split second. He couldn't speak, but he tapped three times on the back of my hand.
Three times. A secret code from my childhood training. Page three. Line three. Book three.
It was the location of the emergency contingency protocol in the Vale Group's master charter. My grandfather was a man who survived three market crashes and a world war; he didn't leave his empire unprotected.
While the helicopter soared over the glittering city skyline, I pulled up the encrypted digital archive of the Vale Charter. I bypassed the main firewall using my grandfather’s personal cipher—the date of my grandmother’s passing.
When I reached Page 3, Line 3, my breath caught in my throat.
“In the event of a hostile takeover via proxy manipulation or medical incapacitation of the Chair, all assets shall automatically dissolve into a blind trust administered by the anonymous entity known as 'The Night Watchman'.”
My phone buzzed. An unknown number.
I picked it up. "Who is this?"
A deep, smooth voice responded. "Your grandfather paid me a retainer of ten million dollars a year to protect you if he ever failed, Elena. The Harlans think they stole your money, but they actually just moved it into a honey trap. Every dollar they transferred is now heavily flagged by the International Monetary Fund as terrorist-linked funds."
"Who are you?" I demanded.
May you like
"You can call me Julian," the voice replied. "And right now, your husband is trying to board a private jet to Switzerland. Would you like me to ground it, or would you like to do the honors yourself?"
Chapter Hook: I looked down at the city lights below, my eyes narrowing. "Don't ground it, Julian. Let him fly. Let him think he escaped. Because the higher they fly, the harder they smash into the pavement."
