Chapter 4 - The Midnight Gala of Lies

Twelve hours later, the news of Malcolm Vale’s sudden "illness" had sent shockwaves through the stock market. The Vale Group's stock dipped by 8%. Seizing the opportunity, the Harlans didn't flee the country. Instead, they used the stolen $450 million to execute a leveraged buyout of the remaining public shares, calling an emergency shareholder meeting at the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel at midnight.

They thought I was dead, or dying in some ICU bed next to my grandfather.

The grand ballroom was packed with reporters, billionaires, and board members when the doors swung open.

Marissa Harlan stood at the podium, dressed in a flawless diamond-encrusted gown, wiping a fake tear from her eye. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the tragic passing of our beloved patriarch, Malcolm Vale, and the total incapacitation of his heiress, Elena..."

"You might want to check the obituary section before you bury me, Marissa," a voice echoed through the speaker system.

The crowd gasped as the heavy oak doors flew open.

I walked in. I wasn't wearing rags anymore. I wore a tailored, midnight-black suit, my hair slicked back, my face pale but radiant with fury. Beside me walked Marcus Vance and a dozen federal agents in windbreakers. Behind them, pushed in a high-tech medical wheelchair but fully conscious and breathing independently, was Malcolm Vale.

The color didn't just leave Adrian’s face; he looked like he was about to vomit.

"You..." Adrian stuttered, backing away from the podium. "You’re supposed to be—"

"Dead?" I finished his sentence, stepping up onto the stage. The security guards hired by the Harlans tried to block me, but Marcus Vance flashed his federal badge.

"Step aside," Vance ordered. "Federal warrant for the arrest of Victor, Marissa, and Adrian Harlan on charges of corporate espionage, attempted murder by poisoning, bank fraud, and human trafficking."

The room erupted into absolute chaos. Camera flashes blinded the stage as reporters screamed questions.

Victor stepped forward, trying to maintain his bravado. "You have no proof! The documents Elena signed are legal! The money was transferred legally!"

"Let’s talk about that money," I said, plugging a USB drive into the podium's media console. The massive projector screen behind us lit up, displaying the live transaction route of the $450 million.

"You thought you were moving my trust to a Swiss account," I explained, looking at Adrian with pure pity. "But as a forensic accountant, I know that specific bank route requires a secondary verification from an authorized clearinghouse. The clearinghouse you used belongs to a shell corporation called Vance & Vale Associates. You didn't steal my money, Adrian. You deposited your entire family's remaining liquidity into a federal asset forfeiture fund."

Chapter Hook: Adrian’s phone suddenly began to ring violently. He answered it with trembling hands. His CFO's voice screamed through the speaker so loudly the whole front row heard it: "Adrian! We’re ruined! The bank just liquidated all our collateral! We don't just own nothing—we owe the government two billion dollars!"
