CHAPTER 1 – The Money That Never Reached Me

The room felt smaller after my father asked that single question.

"Sarah... is the two thousand dollars still enough?"

Nobody spoke.

The roast chicken cooled untouched.

Even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed louder than usual.

I looked at him carefully.

"Dad..."

My voice barely came out.

"I've never received any money from you."

The sentence landed like an explosion.

For several endless seconds, my father simply stared at me.

Not blinking.

Not breathing.

Then he slowly looked toward my mother.

Linda Harrison had spent thirty-one years perfecting the face of the ideal wife.

She chaired charity auctions.

Hosted Christmas dinners.

Volunteered at church every Sunday.

Everyone admired her.

Everyone trusted her.

But for the first time...

Her smile cracked.

"Michael..." she whispered softly.

"We shouldn't discuss finances during dinner."

My father ignored her.

Instead, he unlocked his phone again.

His fingers moved across the banking app.

Transfer after transfer appeared.

May.

June.

July.

August.

Every single month.

Exactly $2,000.

Every payment labeled:

Sarah — Living Expenses

My father frowned.

"That's impossible."

He enlarged the transaction details.

The account number wasn't mine.

It belonged to Olivia.

His golden child.

My older sister.

The daughter my mother constantly praised.

The daughter who somehow always had designer handbags despite never keeping a full-time job.

Olivia suddenly dropped her fork.

The metal clanged against the plate.

"I'm sure it's just some banking mistake."

Nobody answered her.

Dad kept scrolling.

Eighteen transfers.

Thirty-six thousand dollars.

Every dollar intended for me.

Every dollar deposited into Olivia's account.

He slowly lifted his eyes.

"When did this start?"

No one answered.

He asked again.

"When."

My mother swallowed.

"...About a year and a half."

I felt my stomach twist.

Eighteen months.

Eighteen months of skipping meals.

Eighteen months of choosing between electricity and groceries.

Eighteen months of pretending my worn-out shoes weren't letting rainwater through the soles.

Meanwhile...

Someone else had been living my life.

I suddenly remembered Olivia's social media.

Paris.

Miami.

Aspen.

Luxury hotels.

Weekend wine tours.

She always laughed whenever people asked how she afforded everything.

"I've just been blessed."

Blessed.

I almost laughed.

Instead...

I wanted to scream.

Dad finally looked at Olivia.

"Did you know?"

Her lips trembled.

"I..."

She glanced toward Mom.

Wrong move.

Dad noticed immediately.

"You looked at your mother before answering."

Silence.

"So you knew."

Olivia burst into tears.

"It wasn't my idea!"

Mom slammed her hand onto the table.

"Enough!"

The sharp sound startled everyone.

"I did what any mother would do."

I stared at her.

"What?"

She finally looked directly at me.

"You've always been irresponsible."

I blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"You waste opportunities."

She pointed toward Olivia.

"Your sister knows how to represent this family."

I honestly thought I had misheard.

Represent?

I'd worked sixteen-hour days.

I had collapsed from exhaustion.

I had nearly died in a storage room.

And according to my mother...

I wasn't worth investing in.

She continued calmly.

"If people see Olivia successful, it benefits all of us."

Dad looked horrified.

"You stole Sarah's money..."

She interrupted him.

"I reallocated family resources."

The words hung in the air.

Reallocated.

Not stolen.

Not lied.

Reallocated.

As if I were some budget item.

Not her daughter.

My father slowly stood.

The chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"Linda."

She looked relieved.

She thought he believed her.

Then he asked...

"Have you ever stolen anything else from Sarah?"

The color drained from her face.

Just for a split second.

But I saw it.

Dad saw it too.

And suddenly...

He opened the document folder attached to the banking account.

One PDF.

Created eleven months earlier.

The title read:

Property Transfer Authorization

My heart skipped.

Why...

May you like

Was my name on it?
