CHAPTER 2 – The House I Never Knew I Owned

Dad tapped the file.

It opened.

Nobody spoke.

The silence became unbearable.

At the top of the document was my full legal name.

Sarah Elizabeth Harrison.

Below it...

A property address.

I didn't recognize it.

Dad frowned.

"What is this?"

Mom immediately stood.

"Michael, close that."

He didn't.

Instead he kept reading.

Property value:

$684,000.

Owner:

Sarah Elizabeth Harrison.

I almost laughed.

It had to be a mistake.

I lived in a six-hundred-dollar apartment where the ceiling leaked every spring.

How could I own a house worth nearly seven hundred thousand dollars?

Then Dad reached the signature page.

His eyebrows tightened.

The signature looked like mine.

Only...

It wasn't.

I knew my handwriting.

This wasn't it.

"Dad..."

"I never signed that."

He compared it to my emergency contact form from the hospital.

Different handwriting.

Different signature.

Completely different.

His face turned cold.

"Linda..."

My mother remained perfectly still.

"What exactly is this?"

She folded her arms.

"It's just paperwork."

"No."

He placed the phone flat on the table.

"It's felony paperwork."

Olivia gasped.

Mom glared at him.

"Don't be dramatic."

He ignored her again.

Then he read aloud.

"This document transfers Sarah's ownership interest..."

Ownership?

Interest?

I looked at him, confused.

"I don't own anything."

Dad stopped reading.

Then he whispered something that changed everything.

"You were supposed to."

The room froze.

He looked directly at me.

"When your grandmother Eleanor died..."

"...she left you her lake house."

Every sound disappeared.

Grandma Eleanor?

She adored me.

She taught me to bake bread.

She sent handwritten birthday letters every year.

She died two years ago.

Mom told me she'd left everything equally between the family.

Apparently...

That had been another lie.

Dad continued reading.

"The house was left entirely to Sarah."

I felt dizzy.

"Then..."

My voice cracked.

"Where is it?"

Nobody answered.

Dad already knew.

He opened the county tax records linked inside the file.

Current owner:

Olivia Harrison.

Transfer date:

Ten months ago.

Sale price:

One dollar.

One dollar.

Someone had stolen a seven-hundred-thousand-dollar inheritance...

For one dollar.

I slowly turned toward Olivia.

She couldn't meet my eyes.

"You knew?"

She started crying again.

"Mom said Grandma changed her mind."

"She lied."

"I believed her!"

"No."

I shook my head.

"You believed the vacation photos."

"You believed the shopping bags."

"You believed the designer jewelry."

"You believed everything my life paid for."

Olivia buried her face in her hands.

Dad suddenly stood so violently that his chair tipped backward.

"I trusted you."

He wasn't looking at Olivia.

He wasn't looking at me.

He was staring only at my mother.

"For thirty-one years..."

"I trusted you."

Linda finally lost control.

"I was protecting this family!"

"No."

Dad answered quietly.

"You were protecting your favorite child."

She screamed back.

"Sarah never needed that house!"

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

"I was sleeping four hours a night."

"I fainted from hunger."

"I couldn't afford medication."

"I walked to work because I couldn't refill my bus card."

"And you decided..."

"...I didn't need my own inheritance?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dad picked up his phone again.

This time...

He wasn't opening another document.

He was dialing someone.

"Who are you calling?"

Mom whispered.

He looked her straight in the eyes.

"Our attorney."

She froze.

He kept speaking into the phone.

"Daniel..."

"I need you here tonight."

"And call Detective Alvarez."

"I believe my wife forged legal documents..."

"...committed wire fraud..."

"...and stole my daughter's inheritance."

The line went completely silent.

My mother staggered backward.

For the first time in my entire life...

She looked afraid.

But none of us knew...

The detective would uncover something even worse than stolen money and forged signatures.

Because hidden inside my grandmother's original will...

Was one handwritten letter addressed only to me—

May you like

A letter my mother had secretly removed before anyone else ever saw it.

And the truth inside that letter would expose a family secret buried for more than twenty-five years...
