CHAPTER 4 – Beneath the Fireplace

The lake house stood exactly as I remembered it.
White shutters.
Blue front door.
The old wooden swing Grandma loved.
Nothing had changed.
Except...
Someone had already been there.
The front lock had fresh scratches.
One downstairs window had been forced open recently.
Detective Alvarez crouched beside it.
"Someone searched this house."
Dad frowned.
"When?"
The detective pointed toward muddy footprints leading through the living room.
"Within the last forty-eight hours."
My stomach twisted.
Mom.
It had to be.
She knew the letter was gone.
She knew we'd come here.
She had tried to get here first.
Daniel carefully unfolded Grandma's handwritten instructions.
"She wrote one more note."
He adjusted his glasses.
"If Sarah ever receives this letter..."
"...tell her to look beneath the fireplace before anyone else does."
Everyone turned toward the old stone fireplace.
It hadn't been used in years.
Detective Alvarez knelt beside the hearth.
"There."
A loose brick.
He removed it carefully.
Behind it...
A small iron lockbox.
Dust covered every inch.
Daniel unlocked it with an old brass key he'd carried for two years.
Inside were three things.
A velvet pouch.
A stack of documents.
And...
A VHS tape.
Dad blinked.
"A videotape?"
Daniel looked equally confused.
We carried everything into the living room.
Fortunately, the old television upstairs still had a working VHS player.
The tape began with static.
Then...
Grandma Eleanor appeared on the screen.
She looked older.
Frailer.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
"If you're watching this..."
"...then Linda finally stole from Sarah."
Nobody breathed.
Grandma looked directly into the camera.
"I recorded this because I knew she would."
Mom had known.
Grandma had predicted everything.
Then came the sentence that shattered what remained of our family.
"I've hidden proof that Sarah is the rightful owner of everything I built..."
"...because she is not only my granddaughter."
"...she is the child I promised to protect from the day she was born."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Grandma continued.
"Michael..."
"If you're watching this..."
"...I'm sorry."
"You deserve to know the truth."
Dad slowly sat down.
His face had gone pale.
The room was silent except for the crackling sound of the old videotape.
Grandma took a deep breath.
Then she spoke the words none of us were prepared to hear.
"Sarah is not the daughter you think she is... and Linda has spent twenty-six years making sure that secret never came to light."
The screen filled with static.
Then the tape stopped.
No explanation.
No names.
Just silence.
I turned toward my father.
His hands were shaking.
He looked at my mother with tears in his eyes.
And in that moment...
May you like
He asked the one question that would destroy every lie she had spent twenty-six years protecting.
"Linda... if I'm not Sarah's father... then who is?"
