Chapter 1 - The Morning My Daughter Saved My Life

The first time my eight-year-old daughter told me to leave our house before sunrise, I thought she was having a nightmare.

I had no idea she had discovered something that would destroy the life I thought I knew.

At 5:17 that morning, I woke up to the sound of someone crying.

Not loudly.

Not the kind of crying children make when they are scared of a bad dream.

It was quiet.

Controlled.

Like someone trying desperately not to be heard.

I opened my eyes and looked across the bedroom.

My husband, Adrian, was sleeping beside me.

His back was turned toward me.

His breathing was slow and steady.

For a moment, everything looked normal.

The expensive bedroom.

The rain tapping against the windows.

The wedding photo sitting on the nightstand.

The same photo where Adrian was smiling while holding my hand and promising me that he would protect our family forever.

I almost closed my eyes again.

Then I heard it.

A whisper.

"Mommy..."

I sat up immediately.

Standing in the doorway was my daughter, Lily.

She was wearing her purple pajamas.

Her stuffed rabbit was pressed tightly against her chest.

But what scared me wasn't that she was awake.

It was her face.

My daughter looked terrified.

"Lily?"

I quickly got out of bed.

"What happened?"

She didn't answer.

She just walked toward me.

Then she grabbed my hand.

Hard.
