Chapter 8 - The Blueprint of BetrayalI pulled the flash drive and the ledger from the safe, dropping them into my coat pocket just as the red indicator light on the home security panel began to flash erratically.

Warning: System Override Initiated. Local Authorities Dispatched.
Adrian hadn't just set a gas timer; he had set an automated panic alert to notify the police at 6:00 AM—blaming me for an insurance fraud and arson scheme, ensuring that when the house burned, I would be found guilty as the deranged, destructive perpetrator. He was framing me from beyond his own departure.
"Come on, Lily! We have to move!" I grabbed my daughter’s hand, sprinting out of the house and down the block just as the first flashing red and blue lights of a police cruiser rounded the corner.
We ducked into the local 24-hour diner three blocks away, sitting in a cracked vinyl booth near the back where the steaming smell of black coffee and bacon cut through the chill of the morning.
With trembling fingers, I pulled the flash drive from my pocket and plugged it into my phone using an adapter I always carried in my purse.
A single folder appeared on the screen: CASES. Inside were dozens of digital files, audio recordings, and legal documents.
I tapped the most recent file: an audio recording dated just two days ago.
I pressed play, keeping the phone close to my ear.
Adrian’s voice filled the speaker, smooth, confident, and utterly devoid of human emotion.
"Subject Sarah is predictable. Once the primary beneficiary clause is legally transferred under the shell corporation, the remaining assets liquidate automatically. The replacement spouse is already secured in Zurich. The timeline is absolute."
My breath hitched. A replacement spouse in Zurich? He had done this before. This wasn't his first time executing an elaborate disappearance under the guise of tragedy.
And then, a second audio file began playing automatically.
It was a conversation between Adrian and the man in the trench coat from this morning.
"Is the clean-up crew ready?" the man asked. "Everything is set," Adrian replied. "When the local authorities arrive at the address, they won't find survivors. They'll find a confession letter written in her handwriting, complete with financial distress logs. By the time anyone realizes the bodies in the basement don't match dental records, I'll be across the Atlantic under a new passport."

My blood turned to ice. The bodies in the basement.
He hadn't just planned to blow up an empty house. He had prepared decoy remains—untraceable forensic evidence—to ensure the world believed that both I and my precious daughter had burned to death in the inferno.
