Chapter 9 - The Tables TurnThe diner bell chimed softly as a weary-looking waitress walked over with a pot of coffee, casting a sympathetic glance at our wet clothes and pale faces.

"You folks look like you’ve been through a storm," she said gently. "Can I get you something warm?"

"Just two hot chocolates, please," I said, forcing a calm smile. "And... do you have a laptop or a printer I could use for an emergency?"

Ten minutes later, sitting in the diner's small back office with the manager’s permission, I transferred the entire NEXUS folder directly to a secure cloud server, setting it on a delayed public release timer set for 8:00 AM—forwarding copies to every major investigative journalism outlet in the country, the federal financial crimes bureau, and the lead detective of our local precinct.

If Adrian wanted a high-profile tragedy, he was going to get one. But the headline wouldn't be about a grieving husband losing his family.

It would be about an international fugitive finally running out of road.

At 7:45 AM, my phone buzzed violently. An incoming call from an unknown, encrypted international number.

I stared at the screen, watching the numbers flash against the dark glass. I took a deep, steadying breath, wrapped my arm around Lily—who was sipping her hot chocolate with wide, brave eyes—and pressed accept.

"Sarah," Adrian’s voice came through the speaker, sounding slightly strained for the first time. The smooth, calm facade was gone, replaced by a sharp edge of panic. "Where are you?"

"Good morning, Adrian," I replied, my voice as cold and hard as steel. "Or should I say... Mr. Vance? Or whatever name you're planning to use in Zurich today?"

Silence stretched across the line for three agonizing seconds.

"You weren't supposed to be awake," he whispered, his voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "Lily was supposed to stay in bed."

"Never underestimate a mother protecting her child," I answered smoothly. "By the way, your little flash drive makes for fascinating reading. I especially liked the financial routing numbers to the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. I've already shared them with friends of mine at the Federal Bureau."

May you like

"You didn't," he choked out.

"Check your email, Adrian. Your public profile just went live across every major news network in the country. Your flight to Zurich leaves in two hours, doesn't it? Better start running now. Because the police are already waiting at your boarding gate."
