Chapter 5 - THE ULTIMATUMThe silence in the dining room was deafening, broken only by Philippe’s ragged, shallow breathing. Hélène had buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, humiliated sobs. The mighty Beaumont dynasty had been brought to its knees not by a high-priced corporate lawyer or a rival banking cartel, but by a retired suburban mother with a diplomatic pedigree.

"Margaret," Philippe choked out, his voice stripped of every trace of haughtiness. "Name your terms. What do you want? Financial compensation? A retraction? What will it take for you to keep your brother’s department away from our accounts?"
I didn't answer immediately. I stood up from my chair, smoothing down the front of my skirt with agonizing slowness. I walked around the table until I was standing directly behind Claire and Luca, placing a protective hand on my daughter's shoulder.
"I don't want your money, Philippe," I said coldly. "My daughter’s happiness cannot be bought, and neither can mine. But I do have two non-negotiable conditions if this wedding is going to happen."
Philippe looked up, hope flickering in his tear-stained eyes like a dying candle. "Anything. Name them."
"Condition number one," I said, raising one finger. "Tomorrow morning at breakfast, you and Hélène will write, sign, and read aloud a formal, unconditional letter of apology to Claire, acknowledging her hard work, her intelligence, and her absolute equality to every member of your family. You will read it in English, so there is no hiding behind translation."
Hélène dropped her hands, her face blotchy and ruined with mascara trails. "In... in English? Publicly?"
"Publicly," I confirmed, my voice unyielding. "And condition number two..." I paused, letting my gaze drift over Luca before locking eyes with Philippe again. "...you will relinquish every single cent of the Beaumont trust fund Luca is legally entitled to. He will walk away from your corrupt empire completely free, with zero financial ties to your tainted name."
Luca’s head snapped up in shock. "Margaret—wait. My trust fund? That’s millions of dollars. How will we live?"
"You will live the way your father never learned how to live, Luca," I said gently, giving his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "By working for what you earn, building a life with your own hands, and never bowing your head to men who measure human worth by bank balances and royal lineages."
Philippe stared at me in sheer horror. "You want to disinherit my son? You want to strip him of his birthright?"
"I want to save him," I corrected sharply. "You were going to use that money to control him, just like you tried to control your wife, just like my ex-husband tried to control me. Well, the chain ends tonight."
Before Philippe could protest further, Luca stepped forward, his jaw set with fierce determination.
"Done," Luca said firmly.
Claire gasped, grabbing his arm. "Luca, are you sure? Your entire life—"
May you like
"My entire life has been a gilded cage, Claire," Luca said, looking down at her with deep, undeniable love in his eyes. "Your mother just handed me the key. I choose you. I choose a real life."
