Chapter 6 - THE MORNING AFTER AND THE UNEXPECTED GUESTThe sun rose over the quiet Ohio suburb, casting golden light across the dew-covered lawn. But inside our house, the atmosphere was thick with residual tension.

True to my ultimatum, Philippe and Hélène Beaumont sat at the dining room table at 8:00 AM sharp. They looked like ghosts of the arrogant aristocrats who had walked through our front door twenty-four hours earlier. Their designer clothes were rumpled, their eyes hollow from a sleepless night in the local guest rooms.

Philippe, his hands trembling slightly, held a piece of heavy cream stationery. With dry, raspy breaths, he read the apology letter aloud in halting, accented English. Every word tasted like ash in his mouth. He apologized for his arrogance, his prejudice, and his cruel remarks about Claire and me.

Hélène sat beside him, nodding mechanically, tears silently dripping onto the table.

When Philippe finished, silence descended once again. Claire looked across the table, her eyes unsuspicious of bitterness, but filled with a quiet, mature dignity.

"Thank you, Philippe," Claire said softly. "I accept your apology. Because I love Luca, and I want to move forward. But respect goes both ways from here on out."

Just as Philippe exhaled a shuddering sigh of relief, believing the worst was over, the sharp, authoritative ring of the front doorbell shattered the quiet morning air.

I checked my watch. Exactly 8:15 AM.

"Are we expecting guests?" Luca asked, furrowing his brow.

"Not guests, dear," I replied, walking calmly toward the entryway. "Inspectors."

I pulled open the front door. Standing on the porch was not a delivery driver or a neighbor, but a tall, impeccably tailored man in his late fifties with silver-streaked hair and sharp, intelligent eyes. Behind him stood two men in dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases.

"Good morning, Margaret," Ambassador Thomas Vance-Hollis said smoothly, offering a crisp, brotherly smile as he stepped across the threshold. "I trust my European colleagues didn't make too much of a mess of things last night?"

Philippe, who had followed us into the hallway, let out a terrified gasp and stumbled backward against the wall, clutching his chest.

"Tom," I said, stepping aside to let my brother in. "Right on time as always. Come in. We have some very cooperative guests who are dying to show you their financial portfolios."

"Continue to Part 7 to discover what Thomas Vance-Hollis uncovers in the Beaumont financial records—and the shocking betrayal by someone closest to Philippe."
