Chapter 3 - The Confession in the ShadowsThe hospital waiting room seemed to tilt on its axis.

On the tablet screen, Ofelia was meticulously counting the tiny magnetic balls, arranging them in little rows of six. A moment later, tiny footsteps echoed from the hallway. Valentina bounded into the dining room, her blonde pigtails bouncing.

“Grandma! What are those?” the little girl asked on the video, her voice muffled through the tablet’s speaker.

Ofelia didn't jump. She didn't look guilty. Instead, a chilling, practiced smile spread across her face.

“These are magical little candies, my sweet girl,” Ofelia’s recorded voice echoed softly through the quiet hospital corridor. “If you swallow them one by one, they turn into little fish that swim around in your tummy and keep you company when mommy is busy working.”

On the screen, Valentina tilted her head, fascinated. “Real fish?”

“Of course,” Ofelia purred, sliding three of the metallic spheres across the polished wood. “Put these in your mouth right now. But it’s a secret, okay? If you tell your mommy, the magic fish will swim away forever.”

Without a second thought, the five-year-old popped the shiny objects into her mouth and swallowed.

Carolina stopped breathing. Beside her, Andrés let out a sharp, strangled gasp, stumbling backward until his spine hit the wall.

“Mom...” Andrés whispered, his voice cracking like dry glass. “What... what did you just do?”

Ofelia stopped crying instantly. The trembling, fragile old woman act evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating glare that Carolina had never seen before.

“I did what had to be done,” Ofelia snapped, turning on her son with venomous intensity. “Are you blind, Andrés? Look at your life! You’re drowning in debt, your business deals in Monterrey are hanging by a thread, and who is keeping you afloat? Her! With her absurd digital marketing company and her independent income!”

“Mom, what does that have to do with—?”

“Everything!” Ofelia shrieked, stepping forward. “That woman was planning to divorce you. She consulted a lawyer last month—I found the papers in her desk drawer! She was going to take half of everything, take Valentina, and leave you ruined. I had to secure our family’s legacy. If she was framed for child endangerment, she would lose custody, go to prison, and you would retain full control of the assets and the child!”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Carolina felt a cold wave of shock wash over her, followed by a blazing, incandescent rage. Divorce papers? She had never consulted a divorce lawyer. The only papers in her desk were drafts of a business expansion proposal.

She turned slowly to face her husband. “Andrés. Did you know about this?”

Andrés looked like a ghost. He stared at his mother, then down at his shoes, unable to meet his wife’s eyes.

“I... she told me you were unhappy,” Andrés stammered, his voice trembling. “She said you were hiding assets... she said we needed a safety net...”

“You knew she was plotting against me?” Carolina’s voice dropped to a dangerous, icy whisper. “You knew she blamed me for everything, and you let her play with our daughter's life?”

Before Andrés could answer, one of the police officers stepped forward, clicking off the tablet.

“Mrs. Ofelia Morales,” the officer said, pulling out a pair of silver handcuffs. “You are under arrest for attempted murder, child abuse, and conspiracy to commit a felony. And Mr. Morales, you need to come with us down to the station for questioning as an accessory.”
