Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesWithin minutes, the hospital waiting room transformed into a scene of chaotic justice.

Ofelia shrieked and fought back as the cuffs snapped around her wrists, screaming that her son was weak and that Carolina was a witch who had bewitched their family. Andrés didn't even try to defend her. He slumped into a plastic chair, burying his face in his hands as officers escorted him away for interrogation.
Carolina didn't watch them leave.
She turned on her heel and walked straight back to the pediatric intensive care unit.
Through the glass window, she saw little Valentina sleeping peacefully, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. The bandages around her abdomen were clean, and the monitors beeped softly in the background. Her baby had survived a nightmare orchestrated by the very people who were supposed to protect her.
A soft knock sounded on the glass. The pediatric surgeon smiled warmly, stepping out into the hallway.
“She’s out of danger, Carolina,” the doctor said gently. “The surgery was a complete success. But she’s going to need a lot of emotional support, and a very quiet, safe environment when she comes home.”
“Thank you, Doctor,” Carolina said, tears finally spilling over her lashes. “Can I go in?”
“Of course. She’s been asking for you.”
For the next three days, the hospital room became Carolina’s entire world. She slept in the armchair beside Valentina’s bed, reading her favorite fairy tales and feeding her spoonfuls of warm broth.
Outside those four walls, however, a storm was brewing.
The police investigation exploded across local media outlets in Zapopan and Monterrey. The shocking footage of Ofelia feeding the magnets to Valentina—disguised as a twisted bedtime game—went viral within hours, trending at the number one spot across social media platforms in Mexico.
Netizens dubbed Ofelia the "Monster Grandmother," while public outrage targeted Andrés for his complicity and silence.
On the fourth day, a high-priced defense attorney arrived at the hospital bearing a thick stack of documents. It wasn't Ofelia’s lawyer.
It was Andrés’s legal counsel.
Andrés had been released from custody pending further investigation, but public pressure, frozen bank accounts, and a fast-moving grand jury indictment had completely shattered his life.
“Mrs. Morales,” the lawyer said politely, sliding a folder across the bedside table. “My client wishes to offer a full and unconditional settlement. He will sign over complete, exclusive custody of Valentina to you. Furthermore, he is willing to forfeit all rights to the family home, his business shares, and his personal accounts to avoid a prolonged public trial.”
Carolina looked down at the documents. The pages glistened with legal jargon, outlining a total surrender.
She didn't feel triumphant. She felt hollow.
“Where is he?” Carolina asked coldly.

“He’s checking into a treatment facility in Guadalajara, ma'am. And his mother... she’s facing up to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of bail.”
Carolina picked up the pen. She didn't hesitate. She signed every single page, securing her daughter’s future, her financial independence, and her freedom in one swift motion.
