Chapter 7 - The Final GambitEduardo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black digital tablet, slamming it onto the kitchen island. The screen glowed brightly in the dark room, displaying a pre-filled asset transfer agreement next to a live security feed of Valentina’s bedroom upstairs.

On the feed, the little girl was still sleeping peacefully. But hovering just outside the frame of the camera lens was a dark, gloved hand holding a small velvet pouch.
“I have a colleague upstairs right now,” Eduardo whispered, his voice dripping with venom. “A man who doesn't care about family, money, or morals. All he cares about is the paycheck I wired him this morning. The moment I walk out that front door without your signature, he drops three more magnets into her water glass. Tick-tock, Carolina.”
Carolina stared at the tablet screen. Her mind raced at a thousand miles per hour.
She couldn't fight him physically—Eduardo was taller, stronger, and blocking the only exit to the front hallway. She couldn't call the police; the smart-home breaker box in the garage had been disabled, cutting off cellular signal boosters inside the house.
She was completely trapped.
“Sign,” Eduardo demanded, shoving a digital stylus into her hand. “Press your thumbprint to the screen, and I’ll call off the cleaner upstairs.”
Carolina took the stylus. Her hand trembled as she hovered the tip over the digital signature line.
Eduardo smiled, a triumphant, euphoric look taking over his face. He leaned in closer, victory practically tasting like honey on his tongue. He had outsmarted them all: his mother, his brother, the police, and the clever digital marketer.
“Smart girl,” Eduardo murmured. “You always were the sensible one.”
Carolina’s thumb pressed down against the screen.
BEEP.
A green checkmark flashed across the tablet.
Eduardo snatched the device away, his eyes scanning the cryptographic validation data. “Done. It’s official. The empire is mine.” He turned on his heel, pulling out his phone to call his accomplice upstairs. “Alright, get out of there—the deal is sealed—”
He didn't finish the sentence.
From the front hallway, the heavy front door swung wide open with a deafening crash, flooding the dark house with blinding midday sunlight and a chorus of wailing sirens.
Eduardo spun around, his face draining of all color.
Stepping through the doorway wasn't a hitman. It was a tactical unit of federal police officers, led by the lead investigator from the hospital case, flanked by two cyber-crimes officers holding high-gain signal repeaters.
“Eduardo Morales,” the lead officer boomed, his voice echoing off the walls. “You are under arrest for conspiracy, extortion, kidnapping, and attempted murder.”
Eduardo lunged for the tablet, desperate to delete the transfer logs, but an officer tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back in a flash of silver cuffs.
“No! This is illegal! I have the signed transfer!” Eduardo shrieked, thrashing against the pavement as officers hauled him up. “She signed it! Look at the timestamp!”
Carolina stepped forward from the kitchen island, wiping a smudge of ink from her thumb. She wasn't trembling anymore.
“You forgot one crucial detail, Eduardo,” Carolina said coldly, looking down at her trapped brother-in-law. “You’re a brilliant corporate lawyer, but you know nothing about smart-home automation.”
Eduardo froze, staring up at her in horror.
“When you disabled the breaker box three minutes ago, you didn't cut off my private mesh network,” Carolina continued calmly, tapping her smart-watch. “My phone had already mirrored your tablet screen the moment you connected to my local Wi-Fi router. Every word you spoke, every threat you made against my daughter, and every detail of your little master plan was livestreamed directly to the federal cyber-crimes division in Guadalajara.”

The officers hoisted Eduardo off his feet, dragging him toward the open front door as he cursed and thrashed in blind panic.
As they pushed him past the threshold, the wailing sirens outside swelled into a triumphant roar, drowning out his desperate screams.
