Chapter 1 - THE HEARING SIX DAYS AFTER BIRTH

My husband dragged me into court six days after I gave birth and accused me of kidnapping my own newborn.
I entered the courtroom with my son sleeping against my chest.
Across the aisle, Evan sat beside his attorney, Marcus Vail.
His mother, Claudia, wore expensive pearls.
His new fiancée, Vanessa, wore the bracelet Evan had given me on our wedding day.
They looked as though they had already won.
“She brought the baby for sympathy,” Marcus whispered.
Six days earlier, I had delivered my son alone.
Evan refused to come to the hospital unless I signed papers giving him temporary custody.
When I refused, Marcus appeared beside my recovery bed.
“Judges don’t trust unstable women,” he told me. “Especially unemployed women with no home.”
Their proof of my supposed instability was two therapy appointments after Evan shoved me into a pantry door and convinced my doctor I had fallen.
Now Evan claimed I had invented the abuse and disappeared with his child.
The judge looked at me.
“Mrs. Reed, do you have an attorney?”
“No, Your Honor.”
Evan laughed under his breath.
I reached into my bag and removed a thick red folder.
Every photograph, medical report, text message, bank record, and witness statement was organized behind labeled tabs.
Marcus smiled.
“A plea for mercy?”
I placed the folder before the judge.
“This baby is not the reason I’m asking for protection,” I said. “He is the proof.”
