Chapter 6 - THE DNA SURPRISE“Your Honor,” Marcus Vail interjected, making one final, desperate bid to salvage his professional reputation. “Even if the financial matters and domestic disputes require investigation, the accusation of kidnapping still stands before this court. Mr. Reed is the legal father, and—at the very least—he demands an immediate, court-ordered paternity test to verify that this child is indeed his biological offspring.”

Marcus thought he had thrown a brilliant curveball. He knew that Evan had spent the last two months spreading vicious, unfounded rumors among their social circle hinting that I had been unfaithful, planting seeds of doubt so that if everything else failed, he could claim the baby wasn't even his.
Evan looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope returning to his eyes. “Yes!” Evan cried out, pointing a trembling finger at me. “Paternity! How do we even know it’s mine? She was always running around, she could have been seeing anyone—!”
Judge Harrison stared at Evan as if he were looking at a cockroach.
“Mr. Reed,” the judge said slowly, picking up a sealed envelope from the very back of the red folder. “Are you certain you want to request a court-ordered paternity test?”
“Yes! Absolutely!” Evan shouted, standing up again. “I demand proof! I won't have another man’s bastard tied to my family name!”
“Very well,” Judge Harrison said calmly. He slid the sealed envelope across the bench toward the court clerk. “Open Tab Six, Mr. Clerk.”
The clerk opened the last tab in the red folder. He pulled out a formal, multi-page laboratory report bearing the official crest of the State Department of Health Forensic Genomics Division.
“Read it into the record,” Judge Harrison instructed.
The clerk cleared his throat. “State Forensic Genetics Laboratory, case number 884-FL. Pre-natal and post-natal genetic marker comparison between the infant male Reed and the putative father, Evan Reed.”
The clerk paused, scanning the conclusion box at the bottom of the page.
“And?” Marcus asked impatiently, leaning forward. “What does it say?”
“The test,” the clerk read clearly, “was conducted using amniotic fluid samples legally subpoenaed during Mrs. Reed’s emergency hospital admission, cross-referenced with buccal swab samples collected from Mr. Reed during his mandatory municipal driving license renewal last month. Conclusion: Evan Reed is not the biological father of the infant.”
The courtroom went dead silent.
Evan froze, his mouth hanging open in sheer disbelief. “What? That’s impossible! That’s a complete lie! She cheated on me! She’s a whore!”
“Mr. Reed, watch your language in this courtroom,” Judge Harrison barked, his face darkening with fury. He turned the page of the report. “Allow me to read the secondary analysis, Mr. Reed. Because the lab didn't just test against you.”

Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses.
“When the state lab ran the familial DNA database cross-match—standard protocol for disputed paternity cases involving corporate fraud investigations—they matched the infant’s genetic markers against the national registry. The biological father is not an unknown paramour. The biological father is Marcus Vail.”
