Chapter 7 - THE BETRAYAL WITHIN THE BETRAYALThe courtroom exploded.

Marcus Vail staggered backward, his pristine leather briefcase slipping from his grip and crashing open on the floor, spilling legal briefs everywhere. His face turned the color of ash.
“That... that is an absolute fabrication!” Marcus shrieked, his professional composure shattering into a million pieces. He pointed a shaking finger at the judge’s bench. “It’s a forged document! The state lab didn't run that! She hacked the system!”
Evan slowly turned his head to look at his high-priced attorney, his best friend, his trusted confidant of ten years. The man he paid half a million dollars a year to protect his interests.
“Marcus?” Evan whispered, his voice cracking horribly. “What... what is he talking about?”
Marcus couldn't speak. He was sweating profusely, staring at the floor, unable to meet Evan’s eyes.
I looked down at my sleeping son, then raised my gaze to meet Claudia’s horrified stare in the gallery.
“You didn't know, did you, Claudia?” I said softly, my voice cutting through the noise of the courtroom. “You thought Evan was the sole heir to the Reed dynasty. You thought Vanessa was the only betrayal happening behind my back. But Marcus and Evan have been business partners in more ways than one. They shared office spaces, weekend trips to the Hamptons, and—as it turns out—confidential access to my private medical appointments while Evan was ‘too busy’ to attend.”
Judge Harrison slammed his gavel down three times, the loud booms finally restoring a semblance of order.
“Quiet! Absolute quiet in this courtroom!” the judge demanded, glaring at Marcus and Evan.
“Mr. Vail,” Judge Harrison said, his voice dripping with ice. “You stood in this court ten minutes ago representing Mr. Reed in a custody and asset dispute involving a child who biological genetics prove is your own flesh and blood. You engaged in a blatant, intentional conflict of interest of historic proportions, violating every canon of legal ethics in this state.”
“Your Honor, I—I can explain—” Marcus stammered, backing away toward the exit.
“Bailiff, arrest Mr. Vail for contempt of court, subornation of perjury, and fraudulent misrepresentation of legal counsel,” Judge Harrison ordered.
Two bailiffs moved with lightning speed, pinning Marcus against the oak railing behind the defense table and snapping steel cuffs around his wrists. Marcus let out a desperate cry as he was hauled away in handcuffs, his expensive suit jacket bunched up around his shoulders.

Evan stood alone at the defense table, utterly abandoned by his lawyer, betrayed by his best friend, and exposed in front of his mother and his mistress.
“And as for you, Mr. Reed,” Judge Harrison said, turning his gaze back to Evan. “Your petition for emergency custody of this child is denied with extreme prejudice. Furthermore, based on the evidence of domestic abuse, financial embezzlement, and corporate fraud contained within Mrs. Reed’s red folder, this court is issuing immediate warrants for your arrest and freezing all assets belonging to you, Miss Vance, and Claudia Reed.”
