Chapter 1 - THE INK IS DRYThe silence inside the hospital room was so thick you could hear the steady beep-beep-beep of my heart monitor.

Vanessaâs hands trembled so violently her phone nearly slipped from her manicured fingers. She stared at the screen, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
âVanessa?â Celesteâs voice lost its smooth, velvet polish, cracking with sudden panic. âWhat do you mean, throwing everything away? Who is throwing things away?â
âThe⊠the sheriffâs department,â Vanessa stammered, her gaze shifting frantically from her phone to me. âMom⊠thereâs an eviction crew at the main estate. Theyâre hauling your wardrobe, your art collection⊠theyâre throwing it into industrial dumpsters on the street.â
Richardâs face flushed a deep, dangerous crimson. He lunged toward my bedside, grabbing the edge of the mattress. âWhat did you do, Maya? What sick game are you playing?â
I didn't flinch. I carefully adjusted my gown, protecting my screaming newborns against my chest. The pain from my surgical incision burned like liquid iron, and the scalding coffee had already left blistering red patches across my thighs. But the adrenaline surging through my veins was sweeter than any painkiller.
âI didnât do anything, Richard,â I said, my voice eerily calm. âYou did. Three weeks ago.â
âI signed trust documents to protect the estate from taxes!â Richard roared, his hands fist-clenching the hospital sheets. âI signed papers for our family!â
âNo,â I corrected him smoothly. âYou signed a deed of absolute transfer. You were so busy sneaking off to luxury hotels with Celeste, so confident that I was just a naive, docile surrogate pumping out your heirs, that you didn't even consult a third-party attorney. You signed over the lakeside estate, the downtown penthouse, and the investment portfolio directly into my name. Sole ownership. Free and clear.â
Celeste let out a choked gasp, clutching her designer coat tightly around herself. âRichard⊠tell me sheâs lying. Tell me this bitch didnât just steal my house!â
Before Richard could answer, his phone exploded with a barrage of notifications. Ring after ring, text after text. He snatched it from his pocket, his eyes darting across the screen.
ALERT: BANK ACCOUNT FROZEN.
ALERT: DEED TRANSACTIONS CONFIRMED.
ALERT: SECURITY ACCESS REVOKED AT 1044 LAKEVIEW DRIVE.
âYou manipulative little snake!â Richard stepped toward me, his fist raised in pure, unadulterated rage.
âTouch her, and youâll spend the next twenty years in a maximum-security prison,â a sharp, resonant voice declared from the doorway.
We all turned. Standing in the entrance was my attorney, Eleanor Vance, flanked by two armed hospital security officers and a uniformed police sergeant.

Eleanor stepped into the room, holding a sleek black leather briefcase. She looked at Vanessa, who was still clutching her empty coffee cup, then down at the severe burns on my skin and the crying babies.
âSergeant,â Eleanor said coldly, pointing her pen at Vanessa. âThat woman just committed aggravated assault on a bedridden post-surgical patient and two newborns. Arrest her immediately.â
