Chapter 2 - THE ARREST AND THE ASHESâAssault? Are you insane?!â Vanessa shrieked as the sergeant stepped forward, unholstering his handcuffs. âI tripped! It was an accident! Dad, tell them!â

Richard tried to step between the officer and his daughter. âNow wait just a minute, Officer. This is a private family disputeââ
âBack up, sir!â the sergeant ordered, shoving Richard back. âMaâam, put your hands behind your back.â
Celeste screamed in horror as the steel cuffs clicked around her daughterâs wrists. âYou canât do this! Do you know who we are? My ex-husband controls the municipal board!â
âNot anymore, he doesn't,â Eleanor said with a cold, razor-sharp smile. She pulled a stack of stamped court documents from her briefcase and handed them to Richard. âMr. Bennett, you have officially been served. An emergency temporary restraining order has been issued against you, your ex-wife, and your daughter on behalf of Mrs. Maya Bennett and her children. You have thirty minutes to vacate all properties owned by Mrs. Bennett.â
Richard tore through the papers, his face turning pale as paper. âThis is absurd! I paid for that house! My family built that legacy!â
âAnd you legally gave it away,â Eleanor replied smoothly. âFurthermore, Mrs. Bennett has initiated full asset liquidation. As we speak, private contractors are clearing out all unauthorized personal property from 1044 Lakeview Drive.â
âMy Birkin bags! My oil paintings!â Celeste wailed, grabbing Richardâs arm and shaking him hysterically. âRichard, do something! Sheâs destroying my life!â
I looked directly into Richardâs panicked eyes. The arrogant man who had walked into my hospital room expecting to discard me like trash was now crumbling right before me.
âYou told me men like you always return to women with class,â I whispered, looking at Celeste. âItâs a pity class canât buy you a roof over your head tonight.â
âYouâll burn in hell for this, Maya!â Vanessa spat as the officer dragged her out of the room, her designer heels scraping against the linoleum floor.
âIâve already been through hell, Vanessa,â I replied, looking down at my sweet, innocent boys as they finally settled against my warmth. âNow itâs your turn to burn.â
The door slammed shut behind them. Eleanor turned to me, her professional demeanor softening. âThe doctors are on their way to treat those burns, Maya. But you need to see this.â
She pulled a tablet from her bag and played a live security feed from my new estate.

On the screen, giant yellow excavators were parked in front of the grand mansion. Workers were hurling racks of high-end furs, gilded furniture, and boxes of Celesteâs prized possessions straight into massive commercial shredders and trash compactors parked on the curb. A crowd of paparazzi had already gathered, flashbulbs exploding like gunfire in the dusk.
Richard and Celeste were about to arrive at a warzone. But what they didn't know was that the real nightmare hadn't even begun.
