Chapter 3 - CORNERED RATSBy midnight, the news of the Bennett family scandal had gone viral across every social media platform. Headlines dominated the press: “Billionaire Real Estate Tycoon Evicted by Hospitalized Wife!” and “Heiress Arrested for Scalding Newborn Twins!”

Stuck in a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city, Richard, Celeste, and Vanessa—who had been released on a steep bail funded by their last remaining liquid credit card—were unraveling.

“We have to kill the story!” Celeste paced back and forth across the stained motel carpet, holding a glass of cheap whiskey. “My reputation is ruined! The country club canceled my membership via email!”

“Shut up, Celeste!” Richard snapped, staring frantically at his laptop screen. “We have bigger problems! Maya revoked my access to the corporate accounts! The board of directors has called an emergency meeting for tomorrow morning to vote on my removal as CEO!”

Vanessa sat in the corner, her arms wrapped around her knees, sobbing violently. “My phone won't stop ringing! Everyone at the firm is laughing at me! They’re calling me the ‘Coffee Burn Heiress’!”

“Control yourselves!” Richard slammed his fist onto the motel desk. “Maya thinks she’s won because she pulled a legal trick. But she made a fatal mistake. She left the offshore holding accounts untouched. I still have $20 million in the Cayman shell company.”

Celeste stopped pacing, her eyes glittering with desperation. “Twenty million? Can we leave the country?”

“No,” Richard growled, a dark, sinister grin spreading across his face. “We don't run. We fight. Maya is weak. She’s alone in that hospital, bleeding and vulnerable. If she dies before the divorce is finalized, all her newly acquired assets legally revert back to me as her surviving spouse.”

Vanessa looked up, her tear-streaked face twisting into something ugly. “What are you saying, Dad?”

“I’m saying my sweet little wife had complications during surgery,” Richard whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous hush. “Tragic, unexpected post-partum complications. And once she’s gone, the twins will need their father to manage their inheritance.”

Celeste slowly smiled, raising her glass. “To post-partum complications.”

They had no idea that every single word uttered in that motel room was being captured by a hidden parabolic microphone installed in the window frame outside—and transmitted directly to my bedside tablet.
