Chapter 7 - NO MERCY FOR THE SNAKESThe dominoes fell with terrifying speed.

By sunrise, federal marshals raided the motel room where Celeste and Vanessa were hiding. Celeste was arrested as a co-conspirator in the attempted murder scheme and hit with multiple counts of wire fraud. Vanessa was charged with felony child endangerment and assault with a deadly weapon.

Their trial became the trial of the century.

Day after day, the national media covered every brutal detail. The parabolic audio recordings, the hospital security footage, and the bank records were displayed for the world to see.

In court, Celeste looked gaunt and hollow, her designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit. Vanessa broke down in tears every time the prosecution showed the photos of the burns on my legs and the red marks on my babies' skin.

When the verdict was read, the courtroom was dead silent.

Richard Bennett: Guilty on all counts. Sentenced to 35 years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

Celeste Bennett: Guilty of conspiracy and wire fraud. Sentenced to 18 years.

Vanessa Bennett: Guilty of felony assault and child endangerment. Sentenced to 12 years.

As they were led away in chains, Celeste caught my eye from the prosecution gallery. I sat comfortably in the front row, fully recovered, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit, flanked by my legal team.

She mouthed the words, ā€œPlease help us.ā€

I simply adjusted my collar, offered her a cold, polite smile, and turned away.
