Chapter 5 - The Price of SilenceThe living room had transformed into an interrogation chamber.

Mateo Silva sat on the sofa, crossing one leg over the other, while his two agents stood by the exits. Óscar was pacing frantically, clutching his head, while Teresa sobbed quietly on the loveseat. Mariana sat across from Mateo, her arms folded, her expression hardened like flint.

"Let's lay out the facts," Mateo said, tapping a leather-bound notebook against his knee. "Doña Teresa accepted an illegal wire transfer of 74,000 pesos from her brother Hector, who embezzled it from a cartel-linked real estate firm. Teresa then passed that cash to her son, Óscar, who used it to purchase high-end automotive parts to launder the cash into physical assets."

"I didn't know it was laundered!" Óscar yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "My mother told me it was an inheritance advance! I swear to God, I didn't know!"

"Ignorance is not a legal defense, Mr. Óscar," Mateo snapped. "And then we have Mariana... who seized the assets and converted them back into cash, liquidating evidence of a federal crime."

"I took back what was stolen from me," Mariana said coldly. "He starved me in my own house. He gave me 1,500 pesos for an entire month of living expenses while spending tens of thousands on car rims. I have receipts proving I paid for his life for six years."

Mateo raised an eyebrow, genuinely amused. "A woman scorned. I respect the nerve, Mariana. But the law doesn't care about your marital financial disputes. The cartel wants their 74,000 pesos by tomorrow morning, or they won't send federal agents to your door—they will send hitmen."

Óscar’s knees gave out. He fell to his knees in front of Mateo. "Please! Please, Commander! There has to be a way out of this! Take the car! Take everything!"

"Your car is a piece of junk worth barely 30,000 pesos without those rims," Mateo scoffed. "And the rims were seized by my team as evidence half an hour ago."

Mateo stood up, buttoning his coat. He looked down at the pathetic sight of Óscar trembling on the floor, then shifted his gaze to Mariana.

"There is one way out," Mateo said quietly.

Teresa looked up instantly, hope flashing in her eyes. "Anything! We'll do anything!"

"Hector left behind a ledger," Mateo explained. "A hard-copy ledger detailing every politician, police chief, and business owner involved in the cartel's land-grabbing scheme in Guadalajara. Hector hid that ledger inside a safe deposit box at the central bank. But he locked it with a two-key security system."

Mateo took a small metallic key from his pocket and held it up.

"I have the first key," Mateo said. "The second key was mailed to Teresa's old apartment two days ago in a unmarked envelope. Teresa... where is that key?"

Teresa gasped, her hand going to her neck. "I... I didn't open it... I thought it was junk mail! I left it in my vanity drawer at my apartment!"

Mateo’s eyes flared with anger. "Your apartment building is currently being watched by cartel spotters. If we go in there with a police force, they will burn the building down to destroy that key."

He turned his eyes back to Mariana.

"You," Mateo said, staring directly at Mariana. "You work at the public library next to Teresa's old residential complex. You have a badge that grants you access to the city’s service tunnels that run directly underneath her apartment building."

Mariana’s heart began to race. "You want me to break into her apartment through the underground tunnels?"

"I want you to retrieve that key," Mateo said. "You do that, and I wipe the slate clean. I drop all charges against you for liquidating the evidence. I put your mother-in-law in witness protection. And as for your husband..."

Mateo looked at Óscar with utter disdain. "...he gets to keep his freedom."

Mariana looked at Óscar. The man who had humiliated her, degraded her, and forced her to beg for food money, was now looking at her with wide, terrified eyes, silently pleading for her to save his life.

"And what if I say no?" Mariana asked.

Mateo’s eyes turned cold as ice. "Then by midnight, the cartel will find this house. And none of you will see the sunrise."
