Chapter 9 - The Final TrapThree days later.

The tropical morning sun beat down on the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta. The ocean waves crashed lazily against the white sands of a secluded private beach.
Inside a luxurious oceanfront villa, Teresa Cárdenas sat on the balcony, sipping a mimosa. She was wearing designer sunglasses and expensive silk robes.
"Ah, freedom," Teresa sighed, looking out at the ocean. "I told you, Óscar, everything would work out. Your friend Mateo handled everything."
Óscar sat in a wheelchair beside her, his chest heavily bandaged under his shirt. He looked pale, but a smug smile rested on his face.
"That stupid bitch Mariana," Óscar scoffed, taking a sip of his wine. "She really thought she was playing us. Mateo told me he dumped her body in the canyon outside Guadalajara after she printed the key for him."
"Good riddance," Teresa spat. "She was always beneath you, son. Always whining about money, counting every peso. She didn't have the vision for the high life."
Suddenly, the front glass doors of the balcony slid open.
Mateo Silva walked out, carrying a silver briefcase. He tossed it onto the glass table between them with a heavy thud.
"Is that it?" Óscar asked, his eyes gleaming with greed. "The fifty million?"
"Everything cleared from the offshore accounts an hour ago," Mateo said, leaning against the balcony railing. "All converted into untraceable bearer bonds and cold hard cash."
Teresa hungrily reached for the latch of the briefcase. "Open it! Open it, Mateo!"
Mateo opened the latches.
CLICK. CLICK.
The lid popped open.
Inside the briefcase, there were no bearer bonds. There was no cash.
There was only a small digital timer counting down from ten seconds... attached to three heavy bricks of military-grade C4 explosive.
"What... WHAT IS THIS?!" Óscar shrieked, struggling to push himself out of the wheelchair. "MATEO, WHAT DID YOU DO?!"
Mateo reached up to his neck, peeled off a flesh-colored latex mask, and unbuttoned his jacket.
Standing before them was not Mateo Silva.
It was Inspector Sofia Gomez of the Mexican Federal Anti-Corruption Task Force.
"Mateo Silva was arrested at the bank two days ago," Inspector Gomez said coldly, stepping back toward the glass doors. "And as for Mariana... she didn't demand fifty percent of the money."
Gomez smiled a dark, satisfaction-filled smile.
"She cut a deal with the Federal Attorney General. She gave us the ledger, the key, and your location in exchange for full immunity and a ten percent whistleblower reward from the cartel's seized assets."
"NO! NO! MARIANA!" Óscar screamed, falling out of his wheelchair onto the tile floor, scrambling frantically toward the doors.
"Oh, and Óscar?" Inspector Gomez added, pausing at the threshold. "Mariana asked me to give you a message."
Gomez pulled out a small, folded piece of paper and tossed it onto Óscar’s bleeding chest.
It was a supermarket receipt.
Printed on it in bright red marker were the words:
"Here’s your meat. Courtesy of 1,500 pesos."
00:03... 00:02... 00:01...
Before Óscar or Teresa could scream, Inspector Gomez dove behind the reinforced concrete barrier of the interior hallway.

BOOM!
A localized blast blew the glass balcony into a million shining fragments, sending the furniture—and the remnants of the C4 charge—shattering out into the empty sky over the ocean.
