Chapter 7 - The Mastermind UnmaskedMariana froze. The blood in her veins turned to ice.

She slowly turned around.

Standing in the doorway of the bedroom, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at her chest, was Óscar.

He wasn't trembling. He wasn't crying. He wasn't the weak, pathetic husband who had been cowering on the living room floor hours ago.

He was wearing sleek black tactical gear, his eyes sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion.

"Óscar...?" Mariana gasped, stepping back until her spine pressed against the vanity. "What... what is this?"

Óscar let out a soft, dark laugh. He lowered the gun slightly, though his posture remained relaxed and lethal.

"You really thought I was just a stupid records clerk's husband who liked shiny rims, didn't you, Mariana?" Óscar said smoothly, stepping into the bedroom.

"Where is Commander Silva? Where is your mother?!" Mariana demanded, her mind racing in absolute panic.

"Mateo Silva isn't a federal commander," Óscar revealed, a malicious smirk spreading across his face. "He’s my business partner. And my 'helpless' mother? She’s the head accountant for our operation. The entire scene at the house... the argument, the tearful confessions, the police raid... it was all a show."

Mariana felt as though the floor had given way beneath her. "A show...?"

"We knew the federal authorities were closing in on our accounts," Óscar explained, pacing around her like a predator. "The cartel ledger was locked in that bank, and we needed the second key. But the apartment building was under heavy surveillance by actual federal agents. If Mateo or I came near this place, we would have been arrested on the spot."

He pointed his gun toward her face.

"We needed someone completely clean. Someone with zero criminal record, someone with access to the library tunnels, and someone desperate enough to play the hero to save her pathetic marriage. You were our perfect little pawn, Mariana."

Tears of pure rage surged to Mariana’s eyes. "You monster... You humiliated me for months! You made me starve on 1,500 pesos!"

"That was just to keep you occupied," Óscar sneered. "If you were busy worrying about how to buy beans and tortillas, you wouldn't notice the wire transfers, the secret phone calls, or the millions of pesos moving through our house. The 74,000 pesos on that receipt wasn't for rims, Mariana. 'Sport Rims' was code for heavy-duty vault-cracking equipment."

He held out his gloved hand.

"Now... give me the key."

Mariana looked down at the silver key in her hand, then looked back into the eyes of the man she had loved and supported for six years.

"You took everything from me," Mariana whispered, her voice trembling with intense rage. "My youth, my money, my dignity."

"And now I'm taking your life," Óscar said casually, cocking the hammer of the gun. "Did you really think you were going to walk out of here alive after discovering who I really am? Hand over the key, and I’ll make it quick."

Mariana’s jaw tightened. A sudden, fierce wave of defiance consumed her.

"If I’m going down," Mariana spat, "I’m taking your fortune with me!"

In one swift, desperate motion, Mariana spun around and threw the small silver key straight out the open fourth-floor window into the storming darkness outside.
