Chapter 4 - The House of Echoes"Let go of me!" I screamed, wrenching my arm back with every ounce of strength I possessed.

The iron grip didn't budge. The man—this thing wearing my husband's skin—stepped effortlessly across the threshold, kicking the front door shut behind him with a heavy, final thud.

"Clara, stop acting hysterical," he said, his voice instantly shifting from smooth charm to a flat, metallic monotone. "You're scaring the child."

Emma let out a piercing shriek and bolted down the hall toward the basement stairwell, slamming the heavy wooden cellar door behind her.

"Emma!" I cried, trying to lunge past him.

The creature blocked my path with terrifying speed. He didn't look like Daniel anymore; his skin seemed to ripple and tighten across his cheekbones, like a poorly fitted mask sliding over something ancient and inhuman.

"She knows too much," the creature remarked calmly, checking the expensive anniversary watch on his wrist. "Children are porous vessels, Clara. They retain memories they shouldn't have access to. Where is the original?"

"What are you talking about?!" I backed away until my spine hit the living room wall, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "Who are you? What have you done to my husband?!"

The thing tilted its head at an impossible, sickening angle. A soft pop echoed from its neck.

"Your husband? Oh, Clara. Daniel hasn't existed for three years. Not since he took that solo climbing trip to the Cascades." The creature stepped closer, its cobalt eyes burning into my soul. "I merely assumed his lease. His job. His mortgage. His life. And you... you never even noticed the upgrade."

A wave of intense nausea hit me. Three years. Three years of anniversaries, quiet dinners, whispered secrets in the dark—shared with a parasite wearing a dead man's face.

And then, from the dark depths of the basement beneath our feet, came a sound that froze the blood in my veins:

A slow, deliberate knock from the inside of the cellar door.

May you like

Thud. Thud. Thud.

And a weak, raspy voice calling out: "Clara? Open the door. It's freezing down here."
