Chapter 5 - The Basement SecretI stared from the creature standing in my living room down toward the sealed basement door.

Two voices. Two Daniels.
"Don't listen to the mimic," the creature in the navy suit whispered, stepping smoothly toward the cellar stairs. "It's a clever echo. A residual memory trying to claw its way back into the light. You know how unstable foundation walls can be."
"Get away from her!" I screamed, lunging blindly for a heavy ceramic vase on the entryway table.
I hurled it with all my might. The vase shattered against the creature's shoulder, spraying porcelain shards across the hardwood.
It didn't even flinch. It didn't bleed. Where the skin had torn under the impact, there was no red blood—only a thick, iridescent, silver gel that slowly bubbled and sealed itself back together within seconds.
"Fascinating," the creature murmured, inspecting the silver residue on its sleeve. "You always were the most aggressive of the specimen line. That's why Daniel chose you, you know. Before I replaced him."
It walked past me as if I weighed nothing, its heavy footsteps echoing through the house.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
The knocking on the basement door grew frantic.
"Clara! Run! It's not him!" the voice below cried out—a voice thinner, raspier, sounding like a man who hadn't seen sunlight in years.
The creature reached the basement door, placed a single pale hand on the brass knob, and turned it with effortless grace.
"Come on out, Daniel," the creature purred. "Time to face the music."

The door swung open into pitch-black darkness. From the abyss crawled a skeletal figure in tattered, filthy clothes, skin stretched taut over bones, eyes hollow and wild with terror.
It looked up, locked eyes with me, and gasped: "Clara... protect our daughter. He's been living in our skin."
