Chapter 7 - The Dust of Memories"No! Daniel!" I screamed, lunging forward to grab him, but my hands passed straight through his dissolving shoulders as if he were made of smoke.

"Clara..." his voice echoed, fading rapidly into the quiet hum of the house. "Find... Emma... escape the simulation... they're resetting the grid..."
In less than five seconds, my husband—the real man I had loved, the man who had vanished three years ago—vanished completely, leaving behind only a faint pile of grey ash on the hardwood floor.
The creature in the navy suit stepped over the ash pile, adjusting his cuffs.
"Sentimentality is such an inefficient trait," the impostor noted, his blue eyes glowing faintly in the dim hallway. "Now, where did the little girl go? She has extraction protocols to complete."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. Emma. Emma was still in the house.
Without thinking, I scrambled to my feet and bolted up the stairs, taking them two at a time. Behind me, I heard the heavy, unnatural footsteps of the creature beginning the ascent, each step sounding like a steel beam hitting the floorboards.
"You won't touch her!" I yelled, slamming the upstairs hallway door and throwing the heavy iron bolt into place.
I sprinted down the hall to the master bedroom, tore open the walk-in closet, and reached toward the back wall.
My father, a paranoid engineer who had spent his final years warning anyone who would listen about anomalous signal fields, had shown me one safe space before he passed away.
I pressed my palm against the hidden biometric scanner disguised as a clothing hook.
BEEP.
A section of the cedar-paneled wall slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a dark, steel-reinforced panic room filled with emergency supplies, monitors, and an offline communications array.

"Emma!" I called into the darkness of the shelter.
A small, trembling hand reached out from behind a stack of supply crates and grabbed my thumb.
