Chapter 6 - The Split Reality"You're lying!" I sobbed, collapsing onto my knees as the two identical faces stared down at me.

The skeletal figure on the floor—the real Daniel, broken, emaciated, and smelling of damp earth and rust—reached out a trembling, dirt-caked hand toward me.

"Clara, look at his left wrist," the real Daniel choked out, coughing violently. "The anniversary watch. Look at the engraving. Mine has our wedding date. His has a serial number."

My breath caught. I looked up at the creature standing tall in the tailored navy suit.

A slow, chilling smile spread across the impostor's face. Without breaking eye contact, the creature casually unbuckled the expensive watch from his wrist and tossed it across the floor.

It slid to a halt right in front of me.

I picked it up, my fingers shaking uncontrollably, and flipped it over.

There was no romantic inscription about our tenth anniversary. Instead, laser-etched into the cold steel was a string of alphanumeric characters: UNIT-734-OBSERVATION-ALPHA.

"The simulation parameters are expiring, Clara," the creature in the suit said softly, its voice now echoing with a strange, multi-layered resonance, as if a hundred people were speaking at once inside the room. "The observation phase is complete. You and Emma were selected for Phase Two."

"Phase... Phase Two of what?" I stammered, backing away until I hit the base of the staircase.

"Population replacement," the creature replied casually.

Suddenly, outside the front windows, the sunny neighborhood of suburban Chicago flickered. For a split second, the blue sky tore open like old wallpaper, revealing a vast, violet-hued sky filled with colossal, geometric structures spinning silently in the upper atmosphere.

Then, just as quickly, the illusion snapped back into place. Birds chirped. The sun shone.

But the real Daniel on the floor began to dissolve into shimmering dust.
