Chapter 5 - THE PRESSURE BUILDSBy day three, the reality of their new existence set in with the brutality of a cold shower.

Daniel, Carmen, and Valeria had been forced to cram into a cheap, run-down motel on the outskirts of the city, funded entirely by the last remaining physical cash Carmen had stashed in her vintage purse—barely enough for three nights in a room that smelled faintly of bleach and stale cigarette smoke.
For the first time in her life, Carmen had to wash her own coffee mug in a tiny, stained bathroom sink.
"This is unacceptable," Carmen hissed, pacing the cramped linoleum floor while swatting away a stray gnat. "Daniel, call your brother! Call your cousins! Someone in this family must have a spare room that isn't a breeding ground for insects!"
"I tried, Mom!" Daniel snapped back, his voice ragged from stress and lack of sleep. He was sitting on the edge of the sagging double bed, wearing the same wrinkled shirt he had worn out of our apartment. "No one wants to take in three adults with no money and zero prospects. Plus... word travels fast."
Word certainly did travel fast. Valeria’s dramatic social media posts from the sidewalk outside our apartment had gone viral within local influencer circles. Seeking sympathy, she had posted a tearful video crying about her "narcissistic, evil sister-in-law who threw a sweet old woman and a hardworking family out into the street."
The internet, however, possessed a keen detective instinct.
It didn't take long for old college acquaintances, former coworkers, and sharp-eyed netizens to dig up the public property records, corporate filings, and lifestyle disclosures. Within forty-eight hours, Valeria's comment section inverted into a massive public backlash.
“Wait... so you lived in her apartment rent-free, spent her salary on lobster, and locked her three-year-old on the balcony while you feasted?”“Bro, your entire family is professional parasite royalty.”“Imagine getting evicted from a house you didn't buy and crying on TikTok about it. Wild.”
Valeria’s follower count plummeted by fifty thousand in a single day, and the brands sponsoring her lifestyle accessories instantly severed ties, citing a breach of moral clauses.
Sitting in the motel room, Valeria stared at her phone screen, tears of pure rage stinging her eyes as she watched her digital empire crumble into dust.
"They're calling us bums," she whimpered. "They're making memes about us."
"Put the phone down!" Carmen roared, slamming her hand on the bedside table. "We need a strategy. Mariana thinks she can break us? She's a lone woman with a child. Sooner or later, she'll realize she needs a man to manage her affairs, and Daniel is her husband. Legally, she has to support him!"
Daniel looked up, a pathetic flicker of hope crossing his eyes. "You think so? Do you think she'll take me back if I apologize?"
"You don't apologize, you demand your rights as a husband!" Carmen declared, adjusting her collar with aristocratic delusion. "We go to her office. We make a public scene at her corporate headquarters. Force her hand in front of her colleagues and bosses. She cares too much about her precious reputation to let a scandal ruin her career!"
