Chapter 9 - A NEW EMPIRESix months later.

The corporate headquarters of Vanguard Global Enterprises was hosting its annual international gala. The grand ballroom glittered under thousands of crystal chandeliers, filled with CEOs, global investors, and industry titans.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering skyline was a woman completely transformed.

I wore a breathtaking crimson evening gown that commanded the entire room, my hair styled in elegant waves, a genuine, radiant smile gracing my lips.

"Mariana, your Q3 expansion projections in Latin America have outperformed every metric on the board," a senior board director toasted, raising his glass of champagne toward me. "You're positioning Vanguard for its most profitable fiscal year in history."

"Thank you, Richard," I smiled, clinking my glass gently against his. "It takes focus, vision, and cutting out anything that slows growth."

Across the room, a few acquaintances whispered about how brilliantly I had navigated both my corporate ascent and my high-profile personal transition. My story had quietly become a legend in corporate circles—a masterclass in how a woman who built her own empire refused to let parasites pull it down.

As the gala wound down, I stepped out onto the private balcony of the executive suite.

The night air was crisp, cool, and filled with possibility. There was no stale bread out here. There was no cold fear. There was only the vast, open sky and the city lights stretching out infinitely beneath my feet.

My phone buzzed gently in my clutch.

I pulled it out and unlocked the screen. It was a photo sent by our live-in nanny—a wonderful, kind woman I handpicked and paid generously.

The photo showed Camila fast asleep in her custom canopy bed, hugging a giant stuffed teddy bear, looking peaceful, healthy, and deeply loved.

I smiled softly, locking the screen and slipping the phone back into my bag.
