Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Demise At St. Jude’s HospitalTwo days later, the fallout of the Sterling collapse dominated every headline across the country. The mighty Sterling dynasty had crumbled in less than forty-eight hours, exposed as a hollow shell built on debt, embezzlement, and institutional cruelty.

Alexander insisted on taking me out for some fresh air, driving us in a discreet, armored SUV to a private garden overlooking the city. But our first stop wasn't a park—it was St. Jude’s Private Medical Center.
Specifically, the VIP intensive care wing where Evelyn Sterling lay recovering from her stress-induced cardiac scare.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Alexander asked as our elevator smoothly glided up to the fourth floor. He glanced down at me, his hand resting lightly and protectively against the small of my back.
“I need closure,” I said firmly, adjusting my maternity coat. At eight and a half months pregnant, my belly was massive, but I felt stronger, lighter, and infinitely more powerful than I had ever felt in my entire life. “Evelyn spent four years making me feel like I was invisible, like I was trash beneath her manicured shoes. I want her to see who I am now.”
Alexander gave a proud, approving nod. “Lead the way, Elena. I’m right behind you.”
The private recovery suite smelled heavily of antiseptic and expensive floral arrangements that no one had bothered to smell. Evelyn lay propped up in a motorized hospital bed, hooked up to an IV and a silent heart monitor that beeped in a steady, monotonous rhythm. Her hair, usually coiffed to absolute perfection, was disheveled, and her face was pale, looking every bit of her seventy years.
When the heavy oak door clicked open, Evelyn turned her head, expecting a nurse or a disgraced family lawyer.
Instead, her eyes locked onto me—and right behind me, towering like a dark guardian angel, stood Alexander.
Evelyn’s breath hitched. She tried to sit up, clutching at the hospital gown with claw-like fingers. “You… you monsters…” she hissed, her voice raspy and weak. “You destroyed everything. You ruined my son’s life!”
I walked slowly into the center of the room, stopping a few feet away from her bed. I didn't shrink. I didn't look down at my swollen ankles. I stood tall, my chin held high, looking down at the woman who had terrorized me for years.
“Marcus ruined his own life, Evelyn,” I said, my voice calm, clear, and devoid of any fear. “And you helped him every step of the way by teaching him that cruelty and arrogance are substitutes for character.”
Evelyn’s face flushed a furious, ugly crimson. She glared at Alexander, her lips trembling with pure venom. “You! You ungrateful bastard! You stole everything from your own flesh and blood just for a stray dog you picked off the street?!”
Alexander stepped forward, his massive frame casting a long, intimidating shadow over Evelyn’s hospital bed. The room’s temperature seemed to plummet.
“Careful, Evelyn,” Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously low, like a blade sliding out of its sheath. “That ‘stray dog’ is carrying the only legitimate heir to whatever is left of this family name. One more harsh word directed at Elena, and I’ll make sure your medical insurance gets mysteriously revoked by noon.”
Evelyn froze. The absolute, terrifying conviction in Alexander’s eyes silenced her instantly. She slumped back against her pillows, defeated, glaring at us with bitter, impotent hatred.

“Keep your penthouse, keep your money, keep your fake society friends,” I said quietly, turning toward the door with Alexander by my side. I paused for a split second, looking back at her one last time. “As for me? I’m finally free.”
As we walked out of the sterile hospital room and back into the sunlight, I realized the heavy chains around my ankles were finally gone. But as we stepped into the parking garage, a chilling surprise was waiting for us that neither of us had anticipated.
