Chapter 14 - The Ghost From The Past ReturnsThe name hung in the damp air of the basement like a foul odor.

Sarah.
I stared at Viktor, a cold wave of realization washing over me. We had thought Sarah was broken, defeated, and hiding in total obscurity after the federal raid on Marcus’s apartment months ago. We had assumed she was too cowardly to ever show her face in high society again.
We had underestimated human desperation and bitter spite.
Alexander’s face turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated ice. He didn't yell. He didn't rage. But the terrifying, dead silence radiating from him was far more dangerous than any explosion.
“Dispose of him,” Alexander instructed quietly to the two security guards standing by the corner of the room.
Without a word, the guards stepped forward, unhooking Viktor from the chair and dragging him toward the soundproof exit as the syndicate boss began screaming hysterically for mercy.
Alexander turned to me, his dark eyes filled with fierce, protective regret. “I should have made sure she disappeared permanently months ago. That was my mistake.”
“It’s not your mistake, Alexander,” I said softly, reaching out to place my hand on his broad chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thud of his heart. “She’s desperate. And a desperate animal is dangerous. But now we know she’s planning something for the charity gala next week.”
Alexander’s expression hardened. “Then we are going to use her desperation against her.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, a spark of intuition lighting up in my mind.
“Marcus and Sarah think they are operating in the shadows,” Alexander said, a slow, calculated smirk touching the corners of his lips. “They think they can sneak into our foundation gala next week, create chaos, and reclaim what they lost. So, we are going to send them a formal invitation.”
May you like
“An invitation?” I raised an eyebrow. “Are you crazy? Why invite the people who just tried to have us killed?”
“Because, Elena,” Alexander pulled me gently against his side, his voice dropping to a low, confident whisper. “A trap is only as good as the bait. And next week, we are going to burn their remaining illusions to absolute ash, once and for all.”
