Chapter 15 - The Trap Is SetOver the next six days, the penthouse transformed into a fortress of quiet, calculated preparation.

Alexander didn't change his public schedule. He attended high-profile board meetings, traded stocks, and made sure word leaked through elite social circles that he and I would be hosting the grand anniversary gala for the Sterling-Elena Foundation at the historic Grand Ballroom downtown.
On the fifth day, a sleek, black-bordered envelope arrived at a cheap, run-down motel room on the outskirts of the city—the very motel room where Marcus and Sarah were currently hiding out, living off pawned jewelry and desperate schemes.
Inside the envelope was an VIP all-access pass to the gala, signed in Alexander’s own bold, unmistakable handwriting: “You’re invited to witness the final chapter.”
The night of the gala arrived with a brilliant flurry of winter snow.
The Grand Ballroom was breathtaking, decorated in pristine white roses, crystal chandeliers, and sparkling lights that reflected off the polished marble floor—the exact same marble floor where, less than a year ago, Evelyn had dragged my pregnant body by my hair.
This time, history was not going to repeat itself.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a stunning, floor-length crimson gown that radiated power and elegance. AJ was safely asleep in the penthouse nursery under the watch of our trusted medical team and an entire battalion of private security.
Alexander stood beside me, impeccably tailored, his hand resting securely on the small of my back.
“They’re here,” Alexander whispered softly into my ear, nodding subtly toward the grand oak entrance doors.
I looked down. The heavy doors slowly pushed open.
Stepping into the brilliant light of the ballroom were Marcus and Sarah.
They looked pathetic. Marcus wore a cheap, ill-fitting rental tuxedo, his hair greased back, his eyes hollow and darting nervously around the room like a cornered animal. Sarah wore a flashy, sequined red dress that screamed desperation, clinging tightly to Marcus’s arm as if he were her only lifeline.
They had used the VIP pass Alexander sent them to bypass security entirely, believing they had outsmarted us, believing they were walking into a room full of unsuspecting victims.

As they walked down the center aisle, the chattering crowd of elite guests slowly fell silent, turning to stare at the disgraced former CEO and his mistress with open expressions of disgust and mockery.
Marcus’s face flushed a deep, ugly crimson. He pulled Sarah forward, gritting his teeth, marching straight toward the raised dais where Alexander and I stood waiting.
